transition Lightroom 5 to Lightroom Classic CC: development mode not working

After switching from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom Classic CC I am not able to develop pictures: while the CPU obviously works hard, the main screen remains black!

Library mode seems to be working fine. What should I do?
