Question

Unable to add GPS data to photos

Hi there,

I'm unable to drag and drop photos onto the map to add GPS data to them, nor can I right click on the map itself. I'm running Lightroom Classic CC version 8.1 on a Mac. It's really annoying!

Many thanks in advance

James

I have the same issue with LRC 9.4 and 10. But it works on LRC 9.2.

I had the same issue where seleting the photos, and right clicking on the map to "add GPS coordinates to selected photos didn't do anything. What worked for me was simply selecting the photos and then dragging them onto the map at the location you want the coordinates for. This worked perfectly.

Hi,

I'm currently last available version of Lightroom classic CC and facing this issue.

In fact, this gps issue was present for me since more than 1 year and with Lightroom version before Classic CC.

I have the feeling this issue is not general, some people are not affected.

It is really annoying and BTW I'm unable to reach Adobe Support to get assistance.

Nothing special on my setup, I'm using Windows 10 and my catalog has 85K+ images in it.

Any ideas ?

I'm currently last available version of Lightroom classic CC

The Creative Cloud updater often fools people into thinking they're on "the latest". Please copy/paste here the first ten lines of the menu command Help > System Info. With that, I can recommend next steps for troubleshooting.

And, while this author did not post this for your issue, try anyhow

While you are at it, from that computer, and yes I know your Adobe account is functional, as you are in this forum, bring up Adobe.com, sign in, and manage your account. Not to actually manage anything, just to see that you can connect to the servers.

I suspect for the map feature to work, you need to go thru an Adobe server, that then connects to a Google server (well, LightRoom would), and that connectivity issues might be going on.

I’m able to sign in and manage my account just fine.

Would that be the case since the feature worked on the previous version of Lightroom?

And when you are on that computer working in Lightroom you are connected to the internet? And if you bring up the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop application, it knows you are connected to the internet?

Just getting rid of an assumption.

Yes, I’m connected to the web

Thank you for your reply, johnrellis!

As I wrote, the workaround "Add GPS Coordinates" doesn't help.

An other workaround works though. If I create a Saved Location and drag it onto the photos. It works while many photos are taken in the same location. The solution is not feasible if the photos are taken in multiple locations, for example while travelling.

Here are the first lines from the System info:

Lightroom Classic version: 8.1 [ 1200465 ]

License: Creative Cloud

Language setting: en

Operating system: Mac OS 10

Version: 10.14.2 [18C54]

Application architecture: x64

Logical processor count: 4

Processor speed: 2,5 GHz

Built-in memory: 8 192,0 MB

Real memory available to Lightroom: 8 192,0 MB

Real memory used by Lightroom: 527,8 MB (6,4%)

Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 1 999,3 MB

Memory cache size: 4,0MB

When you drag an image into a map, are you dragging it onto a tag, a bit of text on the map listing a location, or just in the vincinity.

For example say you have an image taken in the Grand Canyon, niw in the map, somewhere the words Grand Canyon National Park will display, did you drag to that spot on the map, or just in the vincinity.

Not at a pc to experiment, thus could all be bull.

Followup. Got on MAC Book (High Sierra) and it works on my rig. Drages an image to near my home on map, and yep, GPS data.

After resetting the preferences, the problem persists unfortunately

Let’s double check some version information, just in case.

In Lightroom, click on help, click on System Information, click on copy. Paste results into your reply

Why not? What happens if you try? Explain further.

I’m not quite sure why it happens, but when I drag the image from the bottom thumbnail strip to the location on the map it doesn’t add the GPS information like it previously did before updating. When I drag the image moves to the map, but nothing more.

Hope this helps

A number of people have reported problems with this. As a workaround, in the Map module, select one or more photos in the filmstrip, then right-click the location on the map and do Add GPS Coordinates To Selected Photos.

Please add your constructive opinion, including whether or not the workaround works for you, to this bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum: Lightroom Classic 8: Drag and drop GPS tagging not working. Right click on map also not working | Photoshop Family Custo… Be sure to include whether the workaround works and the first ten lines from Help > System Info. Also, include the information requested by Adobe as described in this post: Lightroom Classic 8: Drag and drop GPS tagging not working. Right click on map also not working | Photoshop Family Custo…  Finally, click Me Too and Follow in the upper-right corner.

Please continue any further discussion about this in the bug report rather than here, so that everyone concerned sees all the information.
