Unable to delete dng files & remove from disk

I have hundreds of files I have tagged with reject. When I execute cmd+del, the files disappear from the lightroom display. But when I import from the same folder(s), the files are still there, and are imported as new versions (with -1, -2, ... appended to file names). These are not virtual copies (each are ~35mb). The behavior is what I would expect if I selected the "remove from lightroom" option.

Using Find Any File, the original file (without the -n appendage to the file name) cannot be found, but the  -n files are all listed in Finder.

Deleting PSD files works as expected.

The word-around for this issue in an earlier post suggests using Finder. I am able to delete the files with Finder, but given that I need to delete 100s of files located in several folders, that solution is not practical.

My OS is 10.5, Lightroom Classic, version 14.5.1. I have administrative privileges, and the file tags are "-rw-r--r--  staff". The files are all stored on the internal SSD. I have uninstalled Lightroom, deleted the trash, restarted the computer, and reinstalled Lightroom.

Thank you for your reply.

Correction - my OS is 15.5, not 10.5 (sorry); I confirmed that Lightroom Classic has full disk access; and I performed the steps to restore preferences.

The result: a variety of issues.

  1. I'm now able to delete files., but I have a new issue with importing. To test for the file deletion issue, I previously duplicated an existing file and saved it in a new location with a new name. When I import the file from the new location (I verified its presence with Finder), it saves it to the source file's original location (the source for the duplicated file).
  2. If the above is not clear, perhaps the following will help -

With Finder, I duplicated file 123.dng in folder A, and moved it to folder B,

  • With Finder, I renamed 123.dng to "testfile.dng"
  • I Imported testfile.dng from folder B with "Copy as DNG", with Destination "into subfolder" checked, with "organize by date" selected.
  • testfile.dng does not appear in the catalog in Folder B, but the catalog has testfile.dng in Folder A
  • Returning to the Import function with Folder B as the source, testfile.dng still shows that it is available for importing

2. Working with another file in a 1975 folder. I scanned this file on Jun 25, 2021 and I filed it in a 1974 folder, the date of the original film exposure. I "deleted" the file. The end result is that I am able to delete the file from the capture date folder, but the file persists in the catalog folder where I moved it, but does not appear in the catalog. The attached screenshot from Find Any File shows the issue: it is not in the 1974 catalog, I can delete it from the 2021 folder, and hence the file is also in trash.

3. And then, this:

  • Separately, I deleted two files in the same folder
    • one of these disappeared as it should. Find Any File finds one instance in Trash
    • the second is not in the catalog, cannot be imported, but is in the original folder per Finder. Find Any File finds one instance in the original folder

I hope this makes sense to someone.

After 2 days working on this issue, with the assistance of ChatGPT, I believe I have solved the issue. It appears that there was a defect in my Lightroom image folder structure. Using Terminal to scan for attributes, the issue was never located.

The issues resolved when I moved the entire collection of photos onto a new set of folders, and used the Lightroom catalog to find the new locations. Attributes, keywords, collections all survived. I hope this is not too soon to declare victory - time will tell.

I am unable to reproduce the non-problem of PSDs being deleted, i.e., they too cannot be deleted.

Hi @zeke_smith! Thank you for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear about your problem with LrC. I understand how frustrating and time-consuming it is to carefully cull photos for them to show up again.

To confirm, are you really on Mac OS 10.5? I'm asking as it is incompatible with the version of Lightroom you're working with.

Try these out and let us know how it goes:

1) The Cmd + Delete shortcut is used to quickly remove images from a collection marked as rejected. For permanent deletion from your hard drive, use the "power delete" shortcut Cmd + Option + Shift + Delete or click "Delete from disk" after Cmd + Delete. If you're not seeing this dialog box, go to Lightroom Classic menu > Preferences > General > click on "Reset all warning dialogs".

2) Reset your preferences: Please refer to this HelpX article for steps and more info: How to reset Lightroom Classic preferences.

3) Grant LrC full Disk access: Check out the embedded video in this HelpX article: How to give full disk access to Lightroom on macOS.

Cheers!
