Question

Unable to download original/proxy file when exporting

Hi - i receive this error for about 20% of the photos I am exporting in Lightroom Classic. In Lightroom cloud for the same photo set, I do not receive an error when downloading but the same files that error in Classic do not download from LR Cloud.

Classic throws this error:

Unable to download original/proxy file

Each file is then listed with (proxy_unavailable) next to each file.

Any ideas?

Hi @Kent_Leigh1225,

Thank you for flagging this and providing a clear description of the issue. The “Unable to download original/proxy file” message typically indicates that Lightroom Classic cannot access the cloud-based originals or their temporary proxy files while exporting.

Here’s what we recommend to isolate the cause:
 • Update Lightroom Classic to v15.0.
 • Check Lightroom Sync status:
 • In Lightroom Classic, click the cloud icon (top-right corner).
 • Ensure sync is fully up to date and not showing any errors or paused status.

Verify the originals’ location:
 • In Classic, right-click on one of the problem photos and choose Show in Explorer.
 • If it’s missing locally and sync is on, Classic should download it. If it doesn’t, that confirms a proxy/original fetch failure.
 • Try signing out and back in to the Creative Cloud app, then relaunch Classic.
 • If the problem persists, please share a screenshot of the full export error dialog, plus your sync status panel.

Additionally, please share:
 • Your Lightroom Classic version (via Help > System Info)
 • Whether the affected files are RAW, HEIC, or video files
 • And whether your originals are stored locally, on an external drive, or only in the cloud.

Best,
