Unable to Edit Recovered Images

I have a folder of images that I had to recover from my memory card using a recovery software. I imported them into LR and all of them are being labeled as unsupported or damaged. Unsure if this means they are corrupted and unusable or if there is something else I can try to get these back.

Correct answer DuluthJake

I kept trying stuff, and working with the recovery software company. Eventually their answer was more or less "sorry". So I brought it to my local computer service store. Should've gone there right away, they had all of them recovered in full size and uncorrupted in a couple of days and all is back. I guess lesson learned for me! Thanks everyone for trying to help me troubleshoot this out!

Glad you got the images back.

Few things you may want to try:

1. In case of damaged/corrupt files I always first open them using HxD. What I frequently see is empty files (filled from start to end with zero bytes of FF FF FF byte pattern). It is impossible to recover any data from such files. Alternative quick test is: Compress a corrupt file. If the original several MB file is compressed to a ZIP of say 100 KB or less it's basically empty.

2. JpegDigger: See if you can extract JPEG data from the corrupt files. It's a freeware tool. Only useful if the file actually contains data (see 1.)

3. Try recover data from the source (memory card itself) again using advanced file carving using JPEG Recovery LAB. Rather than doing simple header/footer scan or using file system to undelete files, it tries to puzzle files back together. Only works for JPG, CR2 and NEF formats at this time.

Good luck,

Joep

I think you answered your own question. They are Unsupported, Damaged, Corrupted.

Why did you have to use recovery software to get them off the memory card?

Not sure if something happened in importing them or my negligence (probably more likely), I deleted everything off of the memory card only to find I couldn't find them on my computer.

Do you connect the camera directly to the computer or use a Card Reader?
