Undesirable changes from C2 to JPEG

Hello all,

This is not the first time this has happened, but I think it's time I find out why it's happening!

I have a lovely RAW file that looks great post processed, at 200%, but when saved to JPEG, the sky has color banding (At least I think banding is what it's called--I am still a relative newbie!). I don't understand =(

I am attaching a screen shot of the sky IN LRC, at 200%. please tell me if you see a problem. If not, why would it change during the save?

Correct answer Rob_Cullen

Banding is an artifact that can occur when an image is reduced to an 8bit file as in a JPG. Banding is more commonly to be seen in skies or large uniform areas of an image where there are very subtle changes in color tone.

See this link for explanations-  (even in the first "Sunset & Bird" example)

Hi,

The JPG compression link is dead =(

FYI the link is to a webpage whose address starts http - most browsers now presume (or will even forcibly override to) a https version of the chosen webpage - meaning, one with addressing that refers to a security certificate. This is done by general policy, as a reassurance and a protection for the website visitor.

But in this instance, no website version with https is available.

My Microsoft Edge browser insists on trying for a https webpage even when you've edited out the unwanted "s" from the address bar. I find my Chrome browser also initially overrides to https, but is prepared to accept my correction back to http - whereupon I can see this site is still there, as of today, as below

My own takeaway from JPG resizing and compression discussions is (all IMO): number of pixels is a more significant consideration for output than compression is; there is an 'output' sharpening decision to be made that depends on the specifics of resizing and also on the circumstances of viewing or other usage; the 'sweet spot' for compression lives in a relatively narrow useful range (I use 80 for screensized images, 60 for full original res images, when exporting to web); that there is only so much you can do with compression anyway, very strong compression (low %) not being worth having - far better to resize to fewer pixels, and use a more normal saving quality; that setting 100% is still not lossless, offering no clear advantage over say 80-90% so far as seen output quality, at a disproportionate penalty in file size; that if a file is being output for further postprocessing instead, one is better off likely with TIFF - which does allow genuinely lossless saving and re-saving.

And, can you post in a reply a screenshot of your Export Screen?

Example:

/example deleted to save scroll space as OP has posted the requested info/

Hi, still learning so I must ask if "Color Space" could be my problem? Should I change it to what you have? Thanks!

No, I would have been concerned if you placed extreme limits on size . resize.

Yes, this is a SOP inquiry, but it needs asking

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

The above is almost always asked for. And in the community guide, their is an explanation.

So, your discussion is now in the Lightroom Classic community, where it belongs.

Moving on.

1. Inquiry about the attachment.

The screenshot you included as an attachment in your initial post. It looks like it is from your LrC develop module. And it looks like it is probably your original with develop mods, and you have zoomed in tight.

Is that correct?

If it is of you exported JPEG, then why the edits in the history panel?

If it is the original with edits, zoomed in. What is the point of posting that? Perhaps you posted the wrong image?

For my fellow member that hats attachment, and as to show (hopefully) what I see, I have inserted a scrennshot of the authors attachment below:

2. A request

If you should reply with a different screenshot, consider using the Insert Photo button, instead of using a attachment.

Add screenshots, images, and attachments

As a best practice, please add images (jpeg, png, etc.) via the Insert Photos tool

Equipment matters.

Check the system & GPU requirements for LR Classic.

When was the last time you calibrated your computer's display?

Do you have the last graphics drivers from your card maker's website?

You need to upload the original file. As uploaded, it looks fine. Does the banding you speak of show up when viewed in Photoshop as well?

Nope, looks perfect in photoshop also. I have also had other weird things happen on occassion. Sometimes, after I send an image from LRC to PS for a simple edit, when I start working again, after the tiff is sent back to LRC, there are  blown-out highlights that weren't there when I sent it. You may think I've made some type of error to cause such things, but I send images to PS on a regular basis and nothing unusual happens 98% of the time. I've learned to close LRC and restart my computer before sending anything to PS, otherwise, it doesn't always send the file back like it's supposed to do. I sometimes think odd things happen to me because I'm a monthly subscriber. Who knows? Technology is not perfect for sure. I'm not going to explain my entire life on here. I thought perhaps someone else had experience with this issue and could steer me in the right direction. If it hasn't happened to you persoanlly, you most likely cannot help me. I suppose this does belong on the other forum. Can someone please provide the link so I definitely end up in the correct place? Thx

It is impossible for us to help you with this screen shot. Also, the LR forum is probably a better place to ask.

Usually, color banding occurs through compression.  What export "file settings", "image settings" and ""output sharpening" parameters have you set? If you want to, send me your RAW file in a PM and I will examine and export it for a comparison.

Same sexport ettings I always use. Plenty of light during exposure.and standard processing (per me, that is). I prefer not to send my file. and file is unneccessary for this question.

The question cannot be answered based on the image you uploaded, as the banding you detected is not visible here.
