Question

Unique situation

I have the old desktop version of Lightroom Classic from before subscriptions existed. Because I've now graduated to à mirrorless, I'd like to get the latest and greatest LR Classic. I can't find a plan for LrC standalone and I'm wondering if it's not displaying it for me because of my old version. It only shows up for larger package deals. I just want the standalone computer version without the cloud. What am I missing? Does anyone have a link to share? Do I need to call and speak to them? Also wondering about my catalogs from the old version.

Yes, I understand there is not a "Standalone" version. I misspoke. I don't remember how they word it,but it's not reliant on cloud storage and yes,it requires a subscription. I just finished a very frustrating call with an Adobe sales rep obviously from another country. I think I have everything I need for now. I'm assuming my Topaz plugins will be able to be added without too much stress. I'm not computer illiterate, but I'm not a wiz either. Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

Okay, that sounds like a good result, despite the frustrating call.

I will add, in case it wasn't clear to you, and because many people misunderstand this, that Lightroom Classic does NOT rely on cloud storage. All of your original photos are stored on your own computer or on an attached network drive. There is no feature or capability in LrC to store photos in "the cloud". (There is an option in Lightroom Classic for you to share lower resolution versions of your photos in the cloud, but you don't ever have to turn on this option, and even if you do, the original photos are not stored in the cloud)

You might also want to consider that the features in the new Lightroom Classic are far beyond your old pre-classic Lr capabilities. I would never want to go back to Lr 6 or earlier. For many of us, the benefits of the new features out-weigh the drawbacks of the subscription (and in fact, I consider the subscription to be an advantage, not a disadvantage).

  1. I agree. This is why I want to make the upgrade. I just have trouble understanding Adobe website and trying to find what I'm looking for. I think I got the help I needed. Looking forward to all the new tools in LrC.

There is no stand alone version of Lightroom Classic. Lightroom Classic only comes as a subscription in the packages that are displayed to you, i.e. either the Photography plan or the Lightroom plan. You could keep using your old version of Lightroom however, by converting your raw files to DNG before you import them. You need to use the free Adobe DNG Converter to do this. 'Copy as DNG' in Lightroom won't work.
