Unspecified problem

I recently purchased a license for Lightroom and Photoshop and even though I like Photoshop I have a very bad taste in my mouth with Lightroom and if I can't figure this out I will need to drop the software as it is more of a burden than a benefit. 

 

To start off my computer specs are as follows:

  • i-9900K
  • 64 Gigs RAM
  • 2 x M.2 SSDs
  • GTX 970 (Support Direct X 12 and 4K) with 4 Gigs of VRAM
  • Windows 11

 

I have tried every trick in the book to improve performance including

  • Placing the catalogue on a non-OS M.2 SSD Drive
  • Keep a lot of working space on the OS and non-OS drive (about 50%)
  • Disabling Face and Address Lookup
  • Reducing preview size to 1440
  • Using 1:1 Previews
  • Reduced the number of images in a catalogue
  • Change the cache size to 100 GB (and place it on a non-OS M.2 SSD Drive)
  • Upgraded from 16 to 64 Gigs of memory

 

Problems I run into

  • The program badly lags and will not respond (to a point I could lose 1/2 a day in waiting)
  • catalogue takes a long time to build
  • I am constantly getting the blue spinning circle

 

I am really starting to hate this program and I am a 30-year IT veteran and am quite accustomed to working on and resolving PC performance issues. Are there any suggestions at all as after two weeks of trying to fix this problem I am at my wits end.

Graphics Processor Info:
DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (32.0.15.6081)

 

 

So, for the GPU driver, Windows Store v32.0.15.6081. that would be NVIDIA v560.81. A newer one was released five days ago, v560.94. But I doubt that will solve your issue (your existing drive is not that old, and the NVIDIA documentation indicates the update was for a few games) . Note that on this very old GPU, NVIDIA only provides Game Ready drivers (no Creative user specific STUDIO drivers)

 

Should you decide to update the driver, likely via the NVIDIA App, make sure that you select a Custom install as to force a clean install.

 

User Preference: Auto

 

Had your GPU been even older, say a GTX 800 series, then I would absolutely advise turning OFF any Graphics acceleration in LrC /Preferences/Performance/ As that had issue with extremely old GPU's. Mind you this apparently will not help with any issues going on in any AI features in LrC. (some debate on that)

 

Hmm, in your initial statements I do not see that you attempted that. You may want to try turning that Off. Usually this is a diagnostic step. But with such an old GPU, perhaps a preventive step (you can only try)

 

either than that, the System Info, does not just scream out a problem.

Thank you for the advice. It looks like when I enable acceleration and Lightroom and customize the settings (pardon the expression) Lightroom “squeals like a pig”. When I set it to “Auto” or “Off” it starts to play nice. I also deleted “Lightroom CC Preferences.agprefs” in “AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom CC\Preferences”

 

Looks like it is GPU related. Will have to take care of that. Much appreciated.

    I noticed that you have experimented with what hard drives to place various items in. Some points on that:

     

    For performance:

    • The catalog can take advantage of being on your fastest hard drive
    • The catalog can be on any internal or external hard drive connected to your computer
    • The catalog must not be on any network share, not an actual server, a NAS, or the Cloud (not speaking about backups)
    • When looking at hard drive free space. In the hard drive the catalog is on, Look for at least 20% free, some say 25%. LrC will slow down below that.
    • Avoid any situation where for the Library path, OneDrive shows up (typically occurs if you use an MS account as opposed to a local account )
    • The Library Previews must be on the same hard drive and same folder as the catalog. In truth you cannot change that, so this point is moot unless you are very very clever.
    • The Camera RAW CACHE can take advantage of being on your fastest hard drive
    • The Camera RAW CACHE can be on any hard drive (and not Server, NAS, or Cloud)
    • The Camera RAW CACHE does not have to be on the same hard drive as the catalog
    • For Windows computers, if the Camera RAW CACHE is on the same drive as the Windows Paging file (typically C) some small performance aggregation might occur (read/wright competition) might not be apparent.
    • The Photos do not have an advantage of being on the fastest hard drive
    • The Photos can be on any hard drive. Adobe appears to support them being on a Server Share, or the Cloud. BUT DO NOT DO THAT, it eventually fouls up

    Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

    I deleted the catlologs and started fresh without a catlolog attached.

    Your GPU dates back to 2014, that makes it 10 year old technology.  LrC is now much more GPU and VRAM reliant than in the past, and no doubt more AI features will be add. As such, I don't think there's much, if any chance of your realising the performance you expect or hope for. If you can upgrade yor GPU to nVidia 30xx or 40xx series with at least 8GB of VRAM performance should be better.

      One more Item. I did create a new Window profile for Lightroom and minimized the number of applications running in the background and this did little.
