Question

Unwanted automatic adjustment of brightness values in development module / DNG files, mobile phone

Hi, everybody.

I have a problem with Lightroom Classic (version: 14.0) that suddenly appeared yesterday. I was looking at images in a collection of DNG files in the development module. Suddenly the images started to become brighter. This happened automatically in the filmreel below, with the adjustment of brightness values moving from image to image. It also happened when I clicked on a particular file which had not been changed yet: the large image in the middle of the screen became brighter a second after selecting the image, and it remained brighter after selecting another one. The brightness values in the development module do not change however.

I do not know if I accidentally hit anything on the keyboard. The history of the DNG files does not show any command - apart from the import as first step.

Only DNG files which I took with my mobile phone (Samsung S24) are affected by the automatic adjustment. When I click on older RAW files which I took with my Fujifilm camera the brightness level does not change. Also, the automatic adjustment only affects DNG files. The JPG files that the mobile phone produced in sync with the DNG files are not affected - they remain as they are.

I imported DNG files from my mobile phone before yesterday into Lightroom but the automatic adjustment of brightness values did not occur before yesterday.

Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Sounds like you have this adjustment as part of the camera defaults. Camera defaults only apply for raw/dng files, not for jpeg files. And they are (or can be) specific for a certain camera model. https://jkost.com/blog/2024/07/setting-custom-raw-defaults-in-lightroom-classic.html

Dear Johan,

thanks for your reply. I watched the tutorial you sent the link to and changed the settings as described. Then I clicked on "reset" in the development module. No change, however. I compared some jpgs with dng files again that were taken in sync. The brightness difference is vast. The DNG files are far too bright compared to the JPGs.

So I´m still trying to understand what is going on with the DNG files imported from my Samsung S24 camera. Any advice is appreciated.

One addendum to my last comment: I checked the presets again and Lightroom displays "Samsung Galaxy S24 Rear Wide Camera" as camera model in the presets. That is correct. However, the rear wide camera of the S24 can shoot with 12MP and 50MP. I regularly shot the DNG files in question with 12MP. Can this optionality between 12 and 50MP mess up the import and cause the unwanted increase of brightness in the images?
