Question

Unwanted color highlights when auto-processing in Develop

For the past several months, when I auto-process images in Develop, I get unwanted color highlights, usually bright red or blue, in the image.  If I save the images outside Lightroom, these highlights disappear, but they’re still very annoying when examining images inside Lightroom.  The only way I’ve found to mostly get rid of them is to adjust White and Black tonal values to zero.  Even then, some stray color may persist.  But...maybe I want blacks or whites?

Any suggestions for killing this “improvement” in Lightroom Classic?

If they’re red and blue, have you made sure that the shadow/highlight clipping warning (the command View > Show Clipping) is not enabled, or are you talking about something other than those traditional blue/red clipping warnings that have always been in Lightroom Classic since version 1.0?

If they are the standard clipping warnings, that would be consistent with them disappearing when exported, because they only appear as an editing preview tool for quality control. Also, the standard clipping warnings appear only in the Develop module. If that’s what they are, you can just disable them if you don’t want to see them.

If you’re sure they aren’t the usual warnings and you’re still not sure what they are, please post a screen shot of what you’re seeing.

Thanks!  Disabling that checkmark did the trick.  Must have gotten activated by accident a few months ago.

Great to know that was the problem!

The clipping warnings can be enabled (intentionally or not) in several ways. For example, at some point you might have accidentally tapped the J key, the single-key shortcut for toggling both clipping warnings.

They can also be toggled separately using the squares at the top of this histogram, as shown in the demo below. Camera Raw has worked the same way even before Lightroom Classic existed, and before that, Photoshop had these clipping warnings although they work differently in that program.
