Question

Unwritable catalog

I've made a complete mess of my LrC catalog. Unknowingly I've must have corrupted it since, on trying to open it, I get the message that it is unwritable. Unfortunately I hadn't made backups as I went along so I can't access the files in that catalog. I had to make a completely new catalog and start from scratch (fortunately I now backup religiously). Is there some way to repair the older catalog?

Humans cannot corrupt a catalog. Files get corrupted by hardware malfunctions, and on very rare occasions files can be corrupted by gamma rays.

If the message is that it is unwriteable then the catalog is not corrupted and so you probably don't need to make a new catalog. You need to go into your operating system and make sure that the folder that the catalog file is located in has read/write permission.

Could you please quote the exact complete unedited word-for-word error message?

Thanks for responding. I've received two error messages
1) Lightroom cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom catalog-v13-5-6"
because it is not writable and cannot be opened. After that there is some
other language, and suggests to try another catalog. When I do try another,
it calls up the newly created catalog, but that still doesn't solve the
issue of the missing images from the oldeer catalog.
2) The Lightroom catalog "Lightroom catalog v13-5" is corrupt and cannot be
used until it is repaired. Unexpected error opening catalog.

Oh, two different messages. That certainly wasn't clear before.

The first message, which says the catalog is not writeable, can be fixed by changing the permissions (in your operating system) for the folder that the catalog is stored in, so that the permission is now read/write.

The second message indicates you have a different catalog which is corrupt, and you will most likely not be able to use it. If you have a backup then use that. But since you seem to be telling me that you don't have backups, then the edits you did might (or might not) be in .xmp files if the photos are RAW or in the photo file itself if the photos are JPG or TIF or DNG. So you might (or might not) be able to recover the edits this way. Do you save your edits to .xmp either manually or automatically?

Hey, @Fred25830065u6wr. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Is the catalog also stored on the network drive? Also, try these suggestions:

1 - Launch Lightroom Classic with your new catalog & go to File > Import from catalog > target your old catalog. Proceed with merging the (potentially) corrupted catalog into the newly made, internal storage-based catalog. For more help via video-based steps, check here. See https://adobe.ly/3NTC9Rv

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!
