Updating the presets panel in 7.4 (not reflecting folder on harddisk)

Hello,

After a while I wanted to change/rearrange my presets in 7.4, so I went to the /user/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings folder where all my .XMP presets are stored. Now if I re-name or re-arrange folders and presets there and then restart Lightroom, these changes are not being reflected. Also restarting the computer does not do the job. I can even use and apply the presets although they are physically not present in that folder any more. It seems as if those structure and presets are stored in some kind of database.

Is there a way to let Lightroom update the preset panel with the actual structure of the Settings-folder?

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Oliver

Oliver, the Organize Into Groups command of the free Fix Presets plugin lets you rearrange your presets using Finder or Explorer and then reflect that structure in the Presets panel.  (It changes the Group field in the .xmp files to match the folder names.)

Ok, I found out what is going on, "mystery" solved

I re-read one of the first answers of JohanEl54 and he wrote that the whole folder/group-organisation is now kept within the presets. That was the missing link

I took a look into the XMP-files, and there it was - the /cs:Group tag is responsible for the display in the presets panel.

So it absolutely does not matter what you do to your folder structure within the Settings-folder. If you move presets to other folders using Finder or Windows explorer, these moves are not reflected in the XMP files - Lightroom organizes the presets panel according to the information within the XMP files only.....

If you want to re-organize your presets folders you have two choices: Editing your XMP files (changing the /cs:Group tag), or moving your XMP files using the Finder or Windows explorer and then running the Presets Fix plugin. Using the Presets Fix plugin you can have the plugin automatically adapt your XMP files to the current folder structure on your harddisk.

Thanks a lot to all who contributed to this thread and helped me here!

    Best regards, Oliver

    Yes, sure, here we are:

Also here is a screenshot of my actual Settings-folder:

Just five minutes ago I deleted a folder called "004 - BellSisters-Premium_Black_and_White", then I restarted my computer and restarted Lightroom. And that is my Lightroom presets panel:

So the changes I made directly on my harddisk in the Settings-folder are not being reflected in Lightroom. The presets still show up in the presets panel and actually they still do work. So I guess Lightroom stores the presets in some kind of its own database (like Lightroom CC does).

By the way: Thanks for your help, this is really appreciated!!

No, the presets are not stored in some database. Just to make sure that nothing had changed (there are reasons why I'm 100% certain I would know that) I tried it again. I can't reproduce what you see. If I temporarily remove one of my preset folders, that is reflected in the preset list when I restart Lightroom. When I put the folder back and restart Lightroom, the presets are back.

I notice you run Lightroom in German. Is it possible that you have two copies of these presets somehow? One in an English folder and one in a German folder? That's the only explanation I can think of.

Yes, I see both these folder, and in the Settings-folder of my homedir there are all subdirs and presets like they are presented in my presets panel. And any changes I make in here (via the Mac Finder) are not reflected in the presets panel.

Did you try to delete one preset from the Settings-folder and check after restart of Lightroom if this particular preset still shows up? Can you reproduce that on your system? That would be interesting to know.

I often create/delete presets and everything works as expected.

Can you post a screenshot of the dialog you get from the ‘Help - System Info‘ menu?

Of course I restarted Lightroom ;-)  I also restarted the whole computer, but the presets still show up in the preset panel. I also already deleted the two .dat-files, but they still show up (I thought that they were organized in the .dat files)

So I think there is still another place with Lightroom were the presets are organized, it seems like the presets panel in Lightroom does NOT reflect the actual content of the /Library/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings folder.

There are two Library/Application Support/ folders. One at the root of your disk, and one in your Home folder. That second one is where custom presets are (should be) stored, but by default Apple hides this folder, so many people don’t even know it exists. Could that be the issue?

If the name and group organisation is kept within the preset, why is a preset still showing up and working, even if I manually deleted the .XMP from within the Settings-folder?

Are the presets copied and organized within a database in Lightroom (like in Lightroom CC)?

There are a few .dat files in the Settings folder. I assume that indeed they play a part in it. I was able to solve a ‘profile not found’ problem in 7.3 by deleting these (they will be rebuilt).

BTW; if you manually change something (like deleting a preset) you must restart Lightroom before it takes an effect. Apparently presets and profiles are loaded into memory.

The name and the group organisation is now kept inside the preset itself. You have to manage this through Lightroom or Camera Raw for that reason.

Assuming you're referring to 3rd party presets or those you created yourself, these can be renamed by right-clicking on the preset within Lightroom

Regarding rearranging preset groups or order. This can also be done directly from within Lightroom preset panel. Left-click and hold to drag the preset to the group or desired order.

It doesn't work. I even import presets with Lightroom presets panel and it won't work. I still can't see the preset.
