Question

use of LR classic & mobile

Hello,

sorry if my english is not perfect. I'm French, but I prefer trying without an automatic translation.

I work with LR classic to organize, import, save etc... my pictures.

I also have the LR mobile to view, work etc... my pictures.

Sometimes I don't understand how the 2 are working together, and I can not find the solution.

1. I create each year one catalog for one year (eg catalog 2019)

2. In each catalog I create collections to organize the pictures easily. For example one for each season. I import the pictures in each catalog.

3. When I import the pictures, I create files for each import. Pictures files are stored in each files.

Here are my questions :

1. Sometimes when I import, I forget to put them in a collection. I know how to put them in a collection (drag and drop). but I don't understand how I can see, when I select a picture, in which collection it is. You can see the file where it is stored. But is it possible to see the collection, and even more the catalog ?

2. When I launch the sync of the catalog, I choose the fact that I want to stop syncing the preceding catalog (for ex 2018), and I want to sync only 2019.

BUT, when I do that, I have pictures arriving from sync that should be in the preceding years. I don't understand why they come while syncing.

Therefore, I don't know in which cat or collection they are (see question 1)

and more important, I would really like to empty this sync, and only sync the actual catalog.

So you think you can help me, or my questions aren't clear enough ?

Thank you to all.

hello everyone,

Just to keep you posted of my progresses.

I found a way to clean up entirely the cloud.

You login from the web to your account, (so not on LR desktop or mobile), and there is a parameter that clean up all the datas in the cloud.

To my knowledge and the test I made, It does not touch anything on your collection on your desktop. (and if you synced all the datas before this action, you do not lose your work).

Best regards,

and thanks to all for your help

Key word the metadata of the name of the collection that the picture is in when you first put the image in a collection. Than you can look at any time at metadata and see what collection it is in.

I believe your strategy of using  multiple catalogs (one for each calendar year) may be self-limiting for you.

Lightroom is essentially a database driven concept, and you can filter your Library to find images based on each year easily.

Thats what I'd be doing and avoiding the issue you mention above.

But I don't really know your reason for creating one catalog per year, so maybe this advice wouldn't suit . . .

Goodluck though

Hello Tony ,

thanks for your help.

The reason I use different catalog, is that I have limited space on my hard drive, et a ton of pictures.

I only keep 1 or 2 years on my hard drive (with the files of the original pictures), and I move catalogs and files to other drives.

But Maybe I am wrong by doing this ?

Best regards ,

Anne-Laure

It is possible to import your images to other hard drives (internal or external) in the first place, and not have to move them ever. I have two internal hard drives and an external hard drive where I store my images that are in addition to my primary hard drive. I don't store any images on my primary hard drive. And I can manage all of those images in a single catalog if I want to. However, I do have a separate catalog for my scanned work. It's just the way I have chosen to separate things.

If you take photos with Lightroom on you phone, or if you have ever uploaded photos to Lightroom on your phone or tablet, those images are in your Lightroom cloud. When you stop syncing a preceding Classic catalog, and start syncing a new one, all the photos in your cloud will start downloading to your computer. That is probably what is happening in your second question.

I recommend only working with one catalo. Creating new catalogs for each year is confusing things.

Hello, Thanks for your help. If you have any clue of the following I am interested :

- If I delete them directly in the cloud, what would then happen ? no Download, but will they be deleted from the hard drive on their original location ?

First of all, I don't know if you are aware, but it is only possible to synchronize one catalog from Lightroom Classic. And as far as knowing which photo you are clicking on is concerned, once you have put them in collections I would suggest just using the collections. Then it doesn't matter where the images are located. If you want to know where the image is then you can go to the library and choose the option to go to the folder and Lightroom will take you to the folder if you need to be there. But once the images are in collections just use the collection. You can edit them there and print them from the collection, and do just about anything else that needs to be done from the collection.

Thanks for your help.

I know how to locate them in the files, and in the hard drive. What I don't know what to do, is to know in which "collections" they are .

Any clue ?

Thanks
