Using both Classic and Cloud

I understand that you can run both LR Classic and LR CC. Correct?

I currently use LR (Cloud) accessed through my Windows Desktop and Laptop as well as from my iPhone and iPad. All work very well. HOWEVER, I miss the Map Module on Classic and would like to have, on occasion, access to that simply for searching purposes. Would this be possible?

When moving to Cloud I took the precaution of moving my existing library to an external HD and in addition setting up LR Cloud to automatically copy every new image to that drive as it was loaded to the Cloud.

Would it be possible for that drive to be used as the library for a new installation of Classic?

If that were possible would additional new images loaded to Cloud appear in CC automatically.

Yes, you can indeed use both, but not the way you are trying to. What you need to do is simply enable sync in the Lightroom Classic catalog. Lightroom Classic will then download all the images that are in the cloud. There is no way to avoid that. You can set in Preferences - Lightroom Sync where it downloads them and set up a dated folder hierarchy. In order not to get local duplicates, you should stop saving a local copy from Lightroom desktop. Lightroom Classic cannot use these copies.

When moving to Cloud

That gives me pause to ask, what version of Lightroom Classic do you have? Is it the old pre subscription v6?

Good point. If you want to use Lightroom Classic as well, then you need to get the Photography plan with an extra 1TB cloud space. The Lightroom plan does not include Lightroom Classic, and you cannot use an old Lightroom 6 perpetual version because that will not sync.

Thank you both for your replyies. I have several further questions for which I would appreciate an answer if that is possible.

Firstly, I am using the Photography Plan. I just wish to underline why I want to use both versions. I need the Map Module to identify ALL images captured at a specific location no matter when they were captured. I have been using an iPhone as my sole source for the past two or three years, so these images all have GPS data attached. I hope to manually, over time, drag untagged images to general locations. This will be my ONLY use of Classic. All editing will continue to be done on CC/PS.

It is disappointing that I can’t use the images on my External HD but now understand why that is the case. I don’t, however, understand why I can’t continue to save a copy locally for “security”.

How can I calculate what the likely volume of my downloaded Classic library will be. Can I control that in any way as presumably I will not need full blown files if all I need are thumbnails in the Map module?

I very much appreciate the input from you both.

Regards

John
