Using Lightroom Classic to edit remotely

If you want to stick with your own local storage, I like the remote desktop idea because you basically don’t have to change anything. Your post says you use macOS. You could enable Screen Sharing on your main Mac, then on your laptop use the macOS screen sharing app (or a VNC app if it’s a PC) to see and operate your remote main Mac from your laptop. This is easy to do when on the same network but the trick here will be reaching your main Mac securely from your work location, because you’ll need to jump across networks through the Internet and through firewalls; you might have to set up a secure VPN through something like Tailscale (free for personal use). Also, the screen sharing video might not be color-accurate.

You could also switch to Lightroom, but you would have to upload all your photos to the Lightroom cloud (and pay enough for sufficient storage space for it all), and, you would lose all local folder organization, lose a range of metadata-related features, and lose some other features that are not in Lightroom such as printing, soft-proofing, import/export presets, bulk renaming… For some that is fine because they don’t take advantage of those things in Lightroom Classic, but if you do use any Lightroom Classic features that are not in Lightroom, stop and think before you make the switch.
