Question

What is "File Base Name"?

The meta data has so many fields.  I do not know what they all are.  Besides "File Base Name," is there a description of each field?  File Base Name is writeable.  When I put a value in there, it created a second file with that name.  What is this about?  I'm looking for a field that I can put an old filename that is different than the imported filename.

Google gives an explanation:

What is the base name of a file?

Meaning of basename
In the article, the term "basename" is used to mean the name of a file without any trailing extension.

When you rename a file in LrC, the field Original File Name contains ... well you know ... there's no need for you to put the old file name somewhere.

Ah, except the file was renamed before putting it into Lightroom Classic.  I just want to be able to make a note of it somewhere.

DJ, thanks for looking that up on Google.  It's simple, but doesn't quite explain why Lightroom created a new file with that name and also why it is a wriatable field.

I'm new to Lightroom.  I'm just trying to find my way around.

You can type the previous file name into any metadata field you want, as long as you are consistent in using it that way. Or you can utilize the software you have called Lightroom Classic, and use that to do your renaming and then the original name gets saved automatically, seems like an easier way to go.
