What went wrong with this HDR merge

First thing: this happened in LrClassic, but I can't find how to post it that discussion group.

I just merged 5 images for an HDR shot. The merged version has an overlay that is most likely part of one of the images but at a wonky angle that is not in any of the originals. Any ideas how or why this happened? I tried it a second time with the same results.

I've included images to show that the overlay shows up in the merge window. I had Deghosting set to None with Auto Align checked — no other choices.

I'm on a Mac with Sequoia 15.4.1 using LrC 14.3 (just updated it & the OS).

Thanks for any answers!

You did post in the Lightroom Classic discussion group. Try turning off  'Auto Align'. The darkest image may be so dark that it fails to align. The images look like you shot them on a tripod, so they do not need aligning.

Thanks for your answer. I did try it again with Auto Align turned off, but the overlay still showed in the preview and showed up in the merged image. However, I did it one more time and this time, the preview was correct as was the merged image. Weird. I just hope that whatever aberation happened, it won't happen again.

BTW, the images were taken hand-held — I was leaning against a door jam. I must have been stable enough that they didn't need the Auto Align.

I posted the question in Lightroom (for the web). Apparently, it got moved to the right place.

Thanks again.
