Question

When importing from another catalog, all stacks expand. Can this be prevented?

When I import my traveling catalog, photos that I have grouped into stacks and collapsed, expand upon import.  (NOTE:  the stacking itself is preserved.)

NBD, but I use stacking in part to signify that I am done choosing among a group of photos and I'd like to preserve this part of my workflow (done while traveling).

How about hitting 'S' to collapse all Stacks ?

Hi, and thanks for the response.

The issue isn’t that the stacks are expanded. It’s that I use the state of the stacks (collapsed or expanded) to note whether or not (respectively) I’ve “processed” the photos.

On location, I import photos and use LR’s auto stack function. I then look at groups of photos, flagging for delete or pick and promoting the best to the top of the stack. When I’m satisfied, I collapse the stack and move on.

I often don’t have time to do this bit of processing for all my photos. So, if there’s a way to preserve the “state” of stacking – expanded or collapsed – on importing to my master catalog, it would help.

Otherwise, I’ll modify my workflow and use some other notation (e.g., a color).

Thanks again.

This is what I was going to suggest. You'll get a bonus of being able to use your filters and having either color label or star rating in your xmp files.

Do you shoot using motor drive? If your workflow includes deleting lots of dupes that you don't want to store using flags is a fast way to sort, filter, delete...
