Question

When importing the GPS data from the original JPG image is deleted

The process is as follows: I copy the JPG images from the IPhone to the hard drive. I check on properties that have GPS data.

I imported to the Lightroom catalog with Developer Settings > None and Metadata > None.

After importing, the images in Lightroom do not presents GPS data and, what is more strange; The original JPG files on the hard drive have lost the GPS data. Looking at Properties > Details, they're just gone.

This happens to me recently, possibly coinciding with the last update. I have more previous JPG images and they keep their complete data.

Take a fresh JPEG that has not been imported, use you File Manager (Windows File Explorer, Apple Finder) to view the properties (info in MAC) and verify the metadata existence, copy it to your LightRoom (LR) catalog,

Launch LR, navigate to the folder you placed the image in, and sync (do not click on the show import dialog box if offered) . Look at the metadata.

Looking to see if you OS is doing this or LR.

I have unchecked the option Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP and, after deleted al the archives, make a new importation. Now it Works fine.

I have moved the archives from one disk to other a few times. Perhaps this one has troubled the Windows system.

Thanks

That's mysterious. It's very unlikely that Windows or a failing disk would cause the GPS data to be unreadable but not the rest of the photo or metadata.

You might consider re-enabling Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP and doing another test. That option is very useful as a last-ditch backup in case your catalog gets corrupted and your catalog backups don't exist or don't work (all too common, unfortunately).

Two troubleshooting steps:

1. Is the option Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP checked? LR won't modify an imported JPEG unless that option is checked.  Uncheck it to be safe.

2. Take a fresh JPEG that's never been imported into LR, upload it to Dropbox or similar, and post the sharing link here. We can see if the issue happens with our configurations to narrow down where the problem might be occurring.
