Question

"Whites" and "Blacks" behave wrongly in brushes and masks

This happens in all “local edit” modes, such as brushes, gradients, “select subject” etc.

In these tools, the “white” and “black” sliders behave weirdly, almost as they are editing a jpg. There is no latitude in the edit, even though it’s there in the original file: the same sliders, in the full image mode, work perfectly fine.

it’s much quicker to provide an example so I’ll attach screenshots.

as you can tell, in the screenshots on the right i can pull whites to recover sun spots, and push blacks to recover detail in the furniture. on the left, doing the very same edit with brushes, both whites and blacks are severely clipped.

this has been happening forever, I’d love to see it fixed especially for recovering sun spots.

Hey, @_FT_. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll help clarify this for you.

This is expected behavior by design. The local Whites/Blacks sliders intentionally operate differently from the global ones, and this is a known architectural characteristic of the Camera Raw processing engine.

Global Whites/Blacks operate in the raw tone-mapping stage, because they have access to the full raw sensor data and can reach into highlights/shadows that haven't been rendered yet.

    Thanks!

Hi @Sameer K, thank you for chiming in. I see limited opportunity for functionality in the current behaviour, is there no plan to work on this subject? Do you confirm my perception that highlight and shadow recovery, in local adjustments, still operate as global highlight/shadows? I feel like they can reach into unrendered data.

    thank you!
