Question

Why are so many of my jpgs less than 5Mbs?

Hi,

I am a baby photographer & work in a studio. My raw file on import is generally 20-24MB. Once I have edited the images & exported them as jpgs for my clients, they are generally anything from 2 - 6MB. My Export settings are - Quality 100 / Resolution 300 Pix per inch. I would like to get them to export as a higher resolution jpg (8 - 12MB).

Please could I have some advice as to how I can achieve this.

Thanks.

Nicky

First of all, the PPI setting isn't going to have any impact at all on the file size. The image is simply defined by the pixel dimensions, and that's it. The other thing that impacts the file size is the picture content itself. The more dense the image is the larger will be the exported JPEG. What are the dimensions of the original image?

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for your reply.

My original image dimensions are 5472 x3648.

The thing that is confusing me is that I exported an image without editing it at all & it reduces from 20.8MB RAW to 6.4MB JPG.

    Does this sound normal?

This is totally normal. Noisy images compress less well, so if you export an image without any editing it could be bigger because you also did not apply any noise reduction. If you export an image with edits, the quality could be better even if the file size is smaller. It’s a myth that bigger jpegs have better quality by definition. Life is not that simple and quality is in the eye of the beholder, not in the file size.
