Question

Why can't I detect a subject/background on Lightroom/Lightroom Classic?

I’m trying to detect the background/subject while editing pictures, but I keep getting the message “no background detected. couldn’t find background to select” on all images. This is a recent issue that I’ve been having and can’t figure out why. I’ve updated my Mac and Photoshop software, reset my computer, and made sure my GPU settings were set to auto. How do I fix this?

Can you share the image, or perhaps a screenshot of the image?

It’s happening on all of my images, even the ones with a very clear subject/background.

Hi @Angelic_Panthercd8e, Welcome to the Lightroom Classic Community forum! To better help you with this issue, we would like a few more details. Can you send your system info, a screen recording of the issue, and a numbered list of the exact steps needed to replicate it? You can find your system info by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. If you are still unable to gather your System info, please grab a screen recording of what you see.

In the meantime, let's try a few things:

    1. Check GPU Settings:

      • Launch Lightroom Classic.

      • Go to Preferences:

        • On macOS: Lightroom Classic > Preferences > Performance

      • Ensure that the Use Graphics Processor checkbox is selected. If it isn't, please enable it.

    2. Update GPU Driver: Visit the official website of your graphics card manufacturer to download and install the latest GPU driver.

    3. Test Graphics Processor:

      • If the problem persists, disable the graphics processor temporarily:

        • In Preferences > Performance, select Off from the Use Graphics Processor drop-down menu.

      • Quit and relaunch Lightroom Classic to see if the issue continues.

If none of these steps work for you, please send us the requested information. I hope this helps! ^CH

You posted this in the Lightroom Classic forum, so assuming that is indeed what you use, select the ‘Help’ menu and then ‘System Info’. Copy that and post it here.

You answered the most important question; what your GPU is. Intel UHD Graphics 617 1536 MB Is below specs. The minimum specs for the GPU are 2GB. I think that means you’ve reached a dead end road on this Mac. A downgrade of Lightroom Classic may solve this particular issue, but as Apple also stopped supporting your computer, it may be time to replace it.

It sounds like your question is more related to Photoshop, is this the case? Please describe your work flow in more detail, describing the steps leading up to the error, and provide a screen capture of the situation if you are able. If this is a Photoshop question, we can help move it to the appropriate community section here.

I originally submitted my question in the Photoshop community and was told to post here. When I try to edit pictures on Lightroom or Lightroom classic, it will try to detect those things however I keep getting the same message of how a subject or background cannot be detected. I also just noticed that I’m getting a message under masking/people that says “ your computer does not have enough graphics memory to support this feature.” I’ve been able to use these features before, but recently is when I’ve started to see an issue.
