Question

Why does library text filter default to "contains all?"

I exclusively use the Library text filter with comma delimited lists of filenames. Why does this field consistently default to “contains all” instead of “contains?”

“Contains all” is not even the first option in the drop down. Is there a way to make “contains” the default?

It’s curious that in my LR 15.6 / Mac OS 26.6.2, doing the menu command Library > Find (Cmd/Ctrl F) defaults to the last field, operator, and search string used, e.g.

Caption Contains All xxx yyy zzz

If you type Cmd/Ctrl F, enter “Filename Contains <blank>”, then click None in the Library Filter bar, does the search reopen with “Filename Contains <blank>”?  If you click None, exit LR, start LR, and then type Cmd/Ctrl F, does the search reopend with “Filename Contains < blank>”?

    Hi there,

Short answer: Lightroom Classic has no preference to change that built-in starting rule, so the Text filter always opens on “Contains All”.

The reliable workaround is to save your setup once as a filter preset:

    1. In the Library module, show the Filter bar ( \ ) and click Text.

    2. Set the field to Filename and change “Contains All” to “Contains”.

    3. At the right end of the Filter bar, open the Custom Filter menu and choose Save Current Settings As New Preset, and give it a name (e.g. “Filename – Contains”).

From then on, pick that preset from the Custom Filter menu instead of starting from the default — it restores the Contains rule, and you just type your list of filenames.

Adobe documents filter presets here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/desktop/organize-photos-in-lightroom-classic/finding-photos-catalog.html

Hope that saves a few clicks!
