Why is Lightroom Classic CC Sorting by rating when I never asked it to?

Your screen shots show the sort order of Library grid view changing from Capture Time to Custom. A number of people have observed this problem while using the filmstrip:

Adobe hasn't been able to reliably reproduce the problem despite many people complaining about it. It seems there are some possible workarounds:

- If you've got a mouse utility (e.g. Logitech's) installed, uninstall it, or try using a generic $10 mouse (that won't use the utility). Similarly, if you're using a tablet (e.g. a Wacom) try using a generic mouse.

- Immediately after importing photos, select all of them and do the menu command Library > Previews > Build Standard-Sized Previews and wait until the previews build. There's some evidence that trying to use the filmstrip and Develop while previews are building in background can trigger this problem.

Also, please add your constructive opinion to the bug report, and be sure to click Me Too and Follow in the upper-right corner. That will make it a little more likely that Adobe will prioritize a fix, and you'll be notified when the bug's status changes.

Please show us screen shots of what you are seeing and experiencing.

What Exact Filter are you setting?

What OS are you using?

I'm on Win 10 and do not see this behavior.

I don't observe the sort order changing as I change filters, but I may not be doing the same steps as you. Can you provide the precise sequence of steps that shows the undesired behavior?  Or better, a screen recording of the entire LR window while you do those steps?  We can figure out if this is a bug or something specific to your configuration.
