Why two different rename photo windows????

As to Bug, I was referring to how the naming template is different in Import as opposed to Library. Perhaps bug, perhaps by design.

As for Copyright info, in camera vs initially in LrC.  The following is noted (a test)

• In my hand a Fujifilm X-T4
• In the X-T 4, I am able to enter copyright info.
• In the enter copyright info, I can populate two selections
• One being Enter Authors Info
• the other Enter Copyright Info

So, I entered my first name for Author, and I entered the number 2 for copyright (just something simple, short). Took the image (RAF), imported into LrC (Copy) , (SD card reader) , LeC 12.0.1no presets, no rename.

In LrC, without touching any edits, looked at the Metadata (EXIF and IPTC) . Three fields of note:

• Artist: DAVID (this field shows up just after User Comment)
• Creator: DAVID
• Copyright: 2

So Copyright is being honored from camera.

As an addition to this experiment, I reverted the in camera settings to no Author, no copyright. Result has one interesting bit

• Artist is not listed in LrC metadata (as presented)
• Creator: blank
• Copyright: blank

Ah, and as for rename. So in that test image, used my dummy test rename template I keep on hand, edited it to be {Copyright}_{Sequence # (00001)>>} and it worked:

2_00001.RAF

P.S. looking at the application the author is using to embed that metadata with. I has a limited camera compatibility (per web page) Fuji not included, but that is what I have on hand to experiment with (not experimenting with said app, just with rename)

i get what your are saying, but why then can they rename using this information from the camera EXIF/File like Dimensions, Cropped, Exposure, Focal Length, Focal Length 35mm, ISO Speed Rating, Serial Number (camera), Make, Model, Artist, GPS and about 8 more that are coming from the EXIF/File data.

I do not think this is a bug.  The Rename Copywrite token draws its information from the Catalog data field Copywrite and this field is not populated until AFTER the file has been renamed and imported so the token returns a blank.  That is why there are no metadata fields in the Import Rename dialog.

Ah, you've turned me on to a Work Around... unfortunately the work around reveals a Bug.  

1. Goto Library mode

2. hit F2 and create a rename that transfers the data in the EXIF copyright field to the filename
{Copyright>>}-{Sequence # (001)>>}

3. Save that as a preset - "Copyright to Filename"

4. Open File, Auto Import, Auto Import Settings and set "Copyright to Filename" 

This is where the bug kicks in.  Upon import apparently, it does not read the copyright field, you just end up with -0202, -0202, -0203    

This preset works fine in the Library module, but not on Auto import module OR the Import module.

4. Go to the Auto Import settings and choose the preset define above.  

I use Entagged by Foolography to embed the customers' names in the EXIF data

Clearly my head is not in it today.

Yep, my workaround of no practical use, does not handle using pre created metadata as so to already have those names, and likely multiple names.

So, question is, does a Bug Posting exist on this?

The Entagged by Foolographhy app, does it place the desired info in a particular Metadata field each time? In your example you appear to be using Copyright. If that is the case, then you can have a precreated template on hand that would work.

So, got of my rear, and I can indeed replicate the issue.

A workaround.

In the import process, select to rename the photos, Select an existing template, edit it (yes I know missing fields) add to the template Custom Text. Save that as a new template. Then while still in the rename panel, fill in the appropriate custom text.

Multiple names, not so much helpful.

Another option is to rename the files after import (edit: I see OP has now referred to this). At that point the needed data that this renaming refers to, can have been already entered by any of several means. Including, through the use of LrC alone. (edit: for example, applying suitable keywords and perhaps collection membership  to a given batch within the LrC import screen).

A further option is to simply NOT rename files to suit their content at all. There's no need IMO - since you can rely on pure metadata-based management within the Catalog. That's by far the leanest and most agile way to do things IMO. (edit: considering Collections as an equally virtual and metadata based entity)

That still lets you build informative naming for output file versions on the fly, suitably for each usage, based on each image's metadata as it then stands, when those exports later happen over time. Exports do need to reflect this sort of info 'physically', because they will be accessed from outside of the Catalog. Requirements that don't (edit: necessarily) apply to imported files when accessed from within that fluid and virtual environment.

This strategy leaves the relevant image metadata free to be set and later changed whenever appropriate, without any physical consequence or added work ever arising.

No, I want to rename on import to minimize work flow. 

I'm shooting teathered holiday photos (similar) to school photos... one up, next, next, next.   With the Entagged device I can embed the clients name in the EXIF, but working with images it would be far easier if the files were the same name as the customer.   

Sure, I can wait until all the photos are in, then select them all and rename them using the rename function in the library mode but that is an extra step (albeit a short one), but if they are being renamed as they are imported then a less than scholarly assistant can sort then into Collections, output them, and upload them to galleries while I'm still shooting, and customers can see their images in 10-15 minutes after their session.

In an ideal world, LR could Auto Import  the files, Rename them, and then Export them into separate folders by name

Interesting, will have to get off rear end (currently using iPad) and try looking st that template editor from the import step.

Anyway

Normally I would not be creating rename templates while in the import stage. I would use a rename template, but I would have previously created that while in Library mode. Never considered creating a rename template at that stage.

Do I assume correctly that you are deciding to rename photos at import with something you do not have on hand? Such as specific persons name.
