Question

(Win) Lightroom 6.14 importing previews only

Hi Folks

Not a Lightroom expert. so here is my question.

I have all my photos on an external drive as backups. I cannot import them into my computer because the computer does not have enough storage capacity for them.

Is there a way I can just see the photo previews/thumbs on my computer without having to import them. then when i want to edit or save them it reads the actual files from the external drive and saves them to where I say?

Thanks

JT

In order to do anything in Lightroom 6, the photos must be imported. Leave the photos where they are on the external drive when you import.  You can import without moving/copying the photos by using the ADD option, and they are not placed on your internal drive.

Welcome to Lightroom Community, JT. You've mentioned you're using Lightroom 6.14, now known as Lightroom Classic.

Lightroom can do what you wish; this is an everyday workflow for most users. Start using Lightroom > File > Import Photos and Videos > use 'Add' at import to create a link to Lightroom with the original images stored on the external drive & no files are moved in the folders.

Check this to get started with importing: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/how-to/import-photos.html
Here is a series of tutorials for Lightroom Classic: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/tutorials.html

This should help. Let me know if it does.

Thanks!
