Question

XMP files grows to hundreds of MB

Recently with Lightroom Classic 12.3 (Mac) I have had issues with gigantic XMP-files being generated. As far as I can see, it sometimes happens when using the spot removal tool. After removing a handful of objects Lightroom becomes super sluggish and the XMP grovs to several hundred megabytes. Also, Lightroom's library file grows correspondingly in size. Deleting the XMP and "optimizing" the library does not help and just results in the XMP being re-generated to the previous enormous size. Further editing of the specific photo becomes near-impossible due to drop in performance.

If you are doing a humongous amount of masking/spot healing, the drop in performance is not only from writing the XMP file, but from the sheer effort of the CPU and GPU to make use of all of those masking/spot healing.

One consideration is to turn off XMP creation since it is only a subset of information stored in the catalogue.

If you have autowrite to XMP on and are using a lot of masks and spots, then yes, the XMP file will be large.

If you backup regularly, you probably don't need to autowrite, which can hit performance.
