Years of files migrated to computer

I have Lightroom 5 running on a Mac.  My files are organized by date of import in Lightroom. Yesterday when I opened Lightroom, all of my files from 2015-2017 were missing.  Only 2014 files remained.  I download to an external drive, but when I access the images there (via Lightroom), none of my edits are there.

I found the missing files (NEF & JPEG edited images) on my Mac, where they are taking up too much room.

Aside from the issue of how this happened, I would love to somehow import the files back to Lightroom, but I'm not sure how, and I don't want to risk losing them.

HELP!!!

It sounds like you "copied" the 2015-2017 folders to the external drive from outside of LR using Finder or other application. You then 'Removed' those folders at the original location on your system drive from inside LR. Is that what you did? If so the only way to recover the LR edits for the 2015-2017 files is to use a recent catalog backup file:

Missing meaning "not present"; or meaning the photo is shown in Lightroom and has an exclamation point icon or question mark icon to the top right of the image?
