Add instead of Copy for Importing

Is it possible to import existing images from an disk without making a Copy? I want to edit photos internally without uploading them to cloud. So I disabled cloud sync. After I add photos of catalog  Lightroom makes a catalog file of a roughly the same GB size, so basically it copies the photos and my storage space is used twice. No need for that I have my photos organized elsewhere. So is it possible to use Lightroom CC as Classic in that respect that when I import photos into classic I can “add” them not “copy”. It seems that CC only allows to “copy” photos?

No, it makes a copy so that it can upload to the Cloud (which the the reason behind the cloud based Lightroom ecosystem..:. they dropped the CC)

If you don't intend to use the Cloud, then using Classic is surely the better option?
