Adding a star rating to a photo within a stack causes the application to lose context on it's location within the album and return to the first photo in a given album

I have albums with between 1k and 3k photos in them. I’m using the Assisted Culling feature to create stacks based on time (in my case ½ second), and then using the right/left arrow keys to cycle through the stacks. Typically this creates around 400 stacks (and a hundred or so singles, bit I don’t know that’s relevant). When I find a stack that has a photo I like, I either press the 1 key to rate it as one star, or click the star on the UI to add it.

In most cases, this works as expected; it stars the first photo in the stack and then the next time I hit the right-arrow key it will move to the next photo or stack. In some cases however, it effectively resets the view and moves all the way back to the first photo in the album. Note that this does NOT require pressing an arrow key; just the act of setting the rating changes the photo displayed.

To return to the place in the album that I previously was, I’m currently having to filter for all photos >= 1 star, select the last photo, clear the filter and then restack the photos.

I can’t seem to replicate this behavior if the photos aren’t stacked when I rate them.

Currently running lightroom 9.5.1 on a Windows 11 Pro x64 machine.

You mentioned Assisted Culling created the stacks… is the Assisted Culling panel still open when this happens? And are you in Grid view, Compare view or Detail view when this happens? Are you applying the 1 star rating to the top of the stack (stack closed) or to a photo within the stack (open)?

Intermittent issues are difficult to reproduce and get fixed, so any extra info can be helpful. Screenshots can often offer additional clues that help us identify the cause of the problem too.

You did come to the right place, but sometimes people don’t have an answer for you, especially if you describe an intermittent problem. If you don’t know how to reproduce it consistently, how should others do that and tell you what causes this?

Assuming this is the correct place to report bugs, I’d assume a developer or their designee would look at it, attempt to reproduce it, and ask targeted questions. For someone familiar with the code base, I’d hope this triggers some thoughts to dig into that I, as a black box user, would have no way of stumbling upon in an intelligent way.

I do guess I should be slightly more descriptive on “often enough,” however. This likely occurs >20% of the time (i.e. once in every 5 clicks or so).

Sorting is by capture date. This is intermittent and doesn’t happen every time, just often enough to be incredibly annoying.

Check how the album is sorted. Adding a rating means making a change, so if sorting is set to something like ‘last edit’, then this could happen.

Note, it also just occurred while setting a rating on a photo within a stack (after double-clicking on it), not just at the top level. it also seems to not explicitly require usage of the arrow keys either, as I started clicking through stack by stack instead.
