Question

All my photos just vanished, folders and albums still there

All of my Lightroom CC photos suddenly disappeared and I don't know why!

I've seen quite some people having problems with disappearing photos, albums, etc.
But none of the cases I've read here or on reddit matched mine close enough that it would have been of any help. So I want to send a cry for help, cause I'm pretty desperate:

To begin with I have quite some devices I use with Lightroom: 1 Windows PC, 1 Macbook, 1 iPad, 3 Android devices. Plus: I didn't use Lightroom for a while (like 8 month or so).
So it's very hard for me to track down what happened between then, when everything worked perfectly fine and today, where all folders and albums are still there, but show 0 photos.

Wherever I open Lightroom I can watch the photos disappear from the app during sync. The webversion lightroom.adobe.com looks the same. Luckily I managed to backup "C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Adobe\Lightroom CC" and "C:\Users\xxx\Pictures\Lightroom" with the .LRCAT file on my Windows PC and I also have most of the original footage (even it is spread over lots of Raids, disks, etc)

So when I offline the PC and replace the folders with the backups the photos are back in the catalogue in Lightroom (not in full quality, only bad previews). But as soon as I reconnect to the internet all albums are zeroed again.
Exporting the photos does not work since it doesn't have access to the original files.
I tried importing an original RAW file to one of the albums while offline, hoping I could somehow reconnect the original media with the adjustments I did. But Lightroom tells me the photo is already in the album and therefor can't be imported again.

I can't remember doing something that could have caused this behaviour.
It might have happened that I deleted the data of the Lightroom app in the iPad system settings (NOT within Lightroom itself!), because I was running low on diskspace. But I'm not sure if I really did and even if so: This shouldn't delete all my photos from all my albums, should it? (again, I didn't delete anything within the Lightroom app)
I got a mail from Adobe that my subscription will be "Creative Cloud Pro" from now on, but I guess this is only a naming thing...? Several updates of CC and Lightroom apps on all devices, I guess, too - which seems to have caused problems to some.
On my Macbook I recognized Lightroom wasn't even installed anymore, which is weird cause I'm pretty sure I didn't uninstall it myself.

I'm really stuck here: Is there anything I could do with my PC Lightroom folders and my original footage to bring them back together in albums with the adjustments I made?

How the h*** could this have happened?

Any help very, very much appreciated!

Over the years, may similar issues have been caused by the incorrect login details.

Although if @Anshul_Saini  has confirmed that you only have one account associated with your name then it doesn't sound promising.

Have you ever shared a weblink from Lightroom to family and friends. If so, then maybe check the link.

If the link leads to photos, then they must still be at some account in the Cloud.

Thanks for your answer as well!

Unfortunately it seems like I never shared a linked to a lightroom album, so I can't check that...

Hi @Lenny5Aces,

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I understand how alarming this is, especially with years of edits involved. Based on what you’re seeing and what we’ve confirmed internally, here’s the clearest picture we can share at this time.

What’s most likely happening
 • The photos you’re seeing briefly while offline are local previews only.
 • When Lightroom reconnects to the internet, it syncs to the cloud state of your account, which currently has no originals.
 • This means the originals and edits never fully made it to the Lightroom cloud, so the cloud is now enforcing an empty catalog across all devices.

Important context about the iPad
 • On iPadOS, deleting or clearing an app can permanently remove any photos that were imported but not yet uploaded.
 • If photos were added on the iPad and the app (or its data) was removed before sync completed, those originals cannot be recovered from the cloud.
 • iOS does not offer a way to clear “app data only” for Lightroom. Actions like Delete App remove local Lightroom data entirely.

What to do next
 • Go to https://adobe.ly/3NvwDXL and check the deleted folder under all photos, as well as look for Sync Issues.
 • This is the only place where Lightroom will show assets that failed to upload.
 • If items appear there, you can confirm their source and decide whether to re-upload or remove them.
 • If there is nothing in Sync, it indicates the originals are no longer available to the cloud.
 • Keep your Windows PC offline for now to preserve the local previews you still have.

What’s not possible
 • Unfortunately, previews alone can’t be used to restore full-quality photos or edits.
 • If originals were deleted locally before upload, Adobe doesn’t have a server-side copy to restore.

I know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, and I’m truly sorry for the situation.

Best regards,

Thanks Anshul for your detailed reply.

It's not as simple as a syncing issue, since I uploaded and edited lots of different photos at different times across different devices, and organized them into different folders and albums over several years. Now ALL photos - without exception -  are gone.

I do have some sync errors in the web interface but again, that's not the issue here.

Deleted photos is empty as well. 😞
