Question

Allow removing AI denoise from multiple images at once for performance reasons

In Lightroom once you apply AI denoise to an image, the program becomes nearly unresponsive so editing is impossible.  For that reason I always have to apply AI denoise last, and I do it in a batch.  However, if I should want to go back and edit my images further, I now have to remove AI denoise from each one individually in order to edit them without Lightroom hanging constantly and taking ~20 seconds to apply any changes I make.  Please make it possible to remove AI denoise from multiple images at once so that they can be edited.  At the moment if I try and copy the Detail category from an image with no AI denoise applied and then paste to other images, it does not remove denoise.

Hi @Copious Roy, Thanks for reaching out to the Lightroom Community Forum! This issue was addressed in previous versions, so let’s try a few things that may help.

    • Make sure you're on the latest version of Lightroom (9.5). Recent updates include significant performance improvements to AI Denoise, better memory management, and the resolution of several UI responsiveness issues after applying AI-powered edits. If you haven't updated recently, you may notice a meaningful improvement.

    • Regarding batch-removing Denoise: You're correct that currently, Copy/Paste settings for the Detail panel don't remove an already-applied AI Denoise. This is because AI Denoise creates a new, enhanced DNG rather than simply adjusting a slider and removing it reverts to the original file. This currently requires individual action per image.

If updating to the latest version doesn't resolve the sluggishness you're experiencing, I'd recommend sharing your system information (Help > System Info) and approximate image count. That would help us understand whether the performance issue persists after the recent fixes. ^CH

    Hi Claire

Yes, I’m on version 9.5.1.  I have noticed a slight improvement since the previous update to this one, but I still have to do all my editing before applying denoise or the application becomes very unresponsive, so I definitely wouldn’t use the term “addressed” to describe the situation.

I’m unsure how to give an image count since I work from local files on my SSD, and it could be a folder with 5 NEF files or 200 NEF files inside depending on the project.  It doesn’t matter if it’s just 5 files and I add denoise, it immediately kills the performance.  The other AI masks have a similar but not as significant impact, I basically try and avoid using any AI tools until I can’t avoid it as it slows my workflow right down.  I have tried clearing my cache, extending it, resetting Lightroom to factory defaults, reconfiguring hardware acceleration etc. to no avail.
