Question

catalog/LR and LrC

I have as much as around 50k pictures in LR, which synchronise on the cloud with a given name catalog and my adobe id (email).

Calling help desk from Adobe, no one was able to give me the right procedure to import those pictures (recorded in the Adobe Cloud) to LrC (i needed to work on photo books) : trying to synchronise my LR catalog with LrC whilst enjoying the best possible speed of Internet in Paris, i observe a very low rythm of transfer and rather quickly the computer crashes (Imac 2019, 16 Go ram, hard disk 3To). So i was unable to import more than 10k pictures (the computer crashed and the new LrC catalog drashed also to the point it disappeared !!!).

1st question : can i synchronise with LrC using another catalog than the LR one recorded under my identifier (email) ?

2d ? What is the best way to import QUICKLY my pictures from adobe cloud to LrC (with a dedicated external hard drive)?

3rd ? Can i synchronise with more than one account on LR and creative cloud ?

4th ? when i synchronise with LrC, does it need to use the "LR" cloud ??? i wish, i could restart a new catalog, with all my former hard drives, to gather everything in an brand new ssd Hard drive more secure, and double security with also all pictures present in the Adobe cloud also : how would u proceed ? my fear  is to start a new catalog on LrC but interfere with the LR synchronisation (as i have often twice or 3 times the same picture in different locations)

5th ? i guess as many users here, i had to live with issues with hard drives, even ask for a professional to retrieve what he could from a very damaged hard drive. As a result, all my sources are rather fragmented..what advice for gathering everything in a proper, organized hard drive with no double pictures !!?

thks for help

I will try to answer your questions-

1st-  No. You need to be using the same ID (email and password) to access both Lr and LrC photos under the one subscription.

2nd- SImply turn on SYNC in LrC.  ALL (Note ALL!) your Cloud based Lr files will download to a folder (defined in LrC preferences).

3rd-  No.

4th- LrC can only use ONE catalog to Sync with Cloud files. (You can change this synced catalog- with complications, but it can only ever be ONE.)

5th- You need to decide which App (LrC or Lr) is your 'Master controller' of your photos, and plan your photo life around that one App.  Read this article from the Lightroom Queen- COMPARE LIGHTROOM & LIGHTROOM-CLASSIC FEATURES

For the 2d question, IT DOES NOT WORK ie downloading my adobe cloud pictures (which were generated from LR) inLrC: i have been trying many times using the simple SYNC, but i can download max around 1000 pictures and it crashes : LrC does not answer anymore, i have to quit creative cloud and relaunch LrC, for adding circa 1000 pictures more until it crashes again...being patient, i did it 10x in a row, was able to get to 10000 pictures in LrC, but an additional attempt turned into a disaster, as the computer crashed another time BUT i lost the LrC catalog...where i lack knowledge is the following : can i designate an external hard drive to store the LrC pictures ? and if yes maybe the cure is to use an SSD hard drive,  far quicker than my current old school hard drives ???

"can i designate an external hard drive to store the LrC pictures ?"

Yes. Open LrC Preferences to the [Lightroom Sync] Tab. Check the boxes (as in screen-clip) and [Choose] a location (any connected drive) with considerable free space.-

"Maybe the cure is to use an SSD hard drive,  far quicker than my current old school hard drives ???"

The main limitation will be your internet download speed, and many photos will take a considerable time to download. I doubt you would see any difference between SSDs and regular 'Spin' drives.

I do not have the expertise to explain your computer crashes- sorry. Hopefully others can provide more answers. Keep posting to keep the thread going.
