Question

Cleaning Up Cloud Storage - Saving photos and edit (XMP?)

Hi all,

I've been scouring the internet and havn't found a good solution to my challenge, so I'm wondering if it is possible.

Here is my challenge:

  • I want to downloads my edited files, including the edits to save some space on my cloud account
    • When I say edits, I mean the actual Lightroom settings, not a new image with the edits included
    • I want to be able to reupload the file, or open it in LightRoom classic (and not sync to the cloud) and not lose any changes I made
  • I have a hard time throwing away work.  If I spent effort and time editing an image, I want to save those edits so that if I need to tweak it in the future, I can.

I use Lightroom CC to edit photos from either my iPhone, or my Camera SLR (in RAW). For the RAW files, I can download the original and the XMP.  However, from some of the non-raw iPhone images, those in JPEG, it only downloads the original and the edited.  In this case, if I delete the file from he cloud, I lose any edits.  If I were to reimport the file, all the edit settings are set back to default (i.e. 0).

I want to delete some edits from the cloud to save storage space, as this is only a hobby and I do not want to pay more to increase storage space to keep every file on the cloud when I can throw them on a backup disk.

I've come across many posts and how-tos with respect to export, saving, and using the LightRoom Downloader, but none seem to solve this challenge.

Thanks in advance

Your best option is to use Classic Lightroom, if that's in your subscription. Allow stuff to sync down into it, then unsync the photos you no longer want to keep in the cloud.

Downloader is intended as a lifeboat when you want to leave Cloudy Lightroom with all your images. Don't use it for routine downloading.
