Computer shuts down during import

Having problems during import into Lightroom Classic...files are copied without issue but Mac Studio crashes during the rendering of (standard) previews every time, however, this has only started happening since the Lightroom upgrade to 14.4

I have the following setup and have tried four identical Prograde cards and one Sony CF Express card using a Prograde reader and all with the same result, the computer just shuts down before the rendering of the previews is complete. There is no error code in camera or on the computer.

Z9 (firmware 5.20)

Lightroom Classic (Release 14.4)

Prograde CF Express 650 GB card

Sony CF Express 128 GB card

During a shoot a few days ago my Z9 locked up mid shoot (for the first time) and I was unable to turn it off until I removed the battery...the grip also got a little warm after it locked up.

After my Z9 locked up I tried downloading the files and had several corrupt files and many that did not download (at first) or be renamed through Lightroom. After several attempts I was able to download all files but several were corrupted.

After a full format there are no longer any corrupted files in subsequent shoots but they just don’t render and shut the computer down mid progress.

I have done a full format of the cards (in camera) multiple times and even reset the Z9 to factory. I DO NOT have this issue using my Z8 with the same cards.

It seems unlikely to me that this is a card issue as it's happening with so many cards so I'm looking at a software issue as the next logical step. Any ideas are appreciated as I have no idea why this is happening.

The deeper I looked the weirder things got so after a week I did a reformat and reinstalled / restored everything...could not figure out the problem and was tired of spending so much time on it.

Hey, @donc1000. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. Thanks for the detailed post; it helps. I'll help you figure this out.

Could you share a few sample RAW images with us here or via direct message on my profile? You can create and share a public link using any cloud file-sharing service, such as OneDrive, Google Cloud, or Dropbox. Please share screenshots of your import settings.

Also, an entire system crash is almost always related to hardware failure or unique OS bugs, and it rarely involves anything else.

Try to manually copy the images from the card to your preferred target location using macOS Finder, and in Lightroom Classic's import, use Add instead of Copy or Move.

Let us know how it goes. Thanks!
