Question

Does background sync work on iPad yet?

I lost my ipad pro 11 3rd gen overseas and need to replace it. One of the biggest issues is that it didnt do background sync.. in order to cloud sync Lightroom had to be open at the front and screen on and either plugged in or constantly tapping the screen.. cant even switch to youtube while syncing or it will stop.

Opposed to android where I can turn the screen off and put it ina bag and it will just sync everything. Which is what I need.

Now I am considering one of the galaxy S9 tablets, which is slightly more powerful than the A12x iPad I had by the looks, which was definitely easily enough for editing in Lightroom anyway. Though I saw Davinci Rsolve is on iPad, so that makes me consider the iPad Pro again..

The question is does background sync with screen off and not plugged in work on the latest version of iOS yet? Or is iOS still non-functional for location shooting and syncing?

Hello @daniell11223644

You are right that Lightroom apps for iPhone and iPad do not sync in the background.  There was a time that a limited form of this was implemented.  I believe that it was the iOS platform that limited background uploads to 10 minutes.  I forget why the team decided to stop using background upload at all, but perhaps it was due to user confusion about what did/didn't get uploaded.  Or maybe it was that some users were surprised by this, perhaps having cellular sync enabled.

In my experience, the platform limit of 10 minutes on background uploading only helped with incremental uploads and not large batches from capturing any substantial number of images, ie., from an event or anything.  So I never personally got out of the habit of plugging in my device and leaving LR running.

You could write up a new post here as an "Idea" asking the team to look into background uploading again.  For now, one or two things that may help:

  • carry an external battery that allows you to sync over cellular or coffee shop wifi, if you are "on the move"
  • if on an iPad, does split-view work well enough for you to allow LR to keep running while you work in Safari, email, etc?
