Files under 500kb after back up failed help!

So I uploaded my images directly to LR from my SD.  Then when I opened them the following day half of the albums were gone.  They are there now but all the files are smaller than 500kb.  WHERE did my files go and why are they so small?!?! Can they be recovered? I thought all was well and I deleted my SD card
