GRADIENT TOOLS NOT WORKING

Hi Gradient Tools have suddenly stopped working.  I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest LR but still I'm have trouble.  The brush & eraser are greyed out... Anyone else experiencing this & does anyone any idea how to remedy the problem....?  Thank you.

    It looks like you have the Mask overlay showing, and you can't see the effect of the slider adjustment in that mode. Press the O key to toggle the display either off or to show the Tool overlay (the grid lines and the pin). Then you'll see the slider effect. Basically you use the Mask Overlay to help you get the size and shape of the masked area set correctly, then you turn off the Mask overlay so that you can see the effect of the slider adjustments.
