Question

Guidance on workflow best practice?

Hi,

I have LR CC (not Classic), and recently moved desktop pc. I completely confused myself thinking that I had to worry about the catalog file and then how to structure the application and my hard drive. I take 100s of photos in batches (like I'm sure we all do) and need a 'system' that works going forward. I'd be grateful for some confirmations and advice...

1) LR CC (not Classic) does not have a catalog file, this information is stored on the cloud?

2) Does it make sense to store RAW files on the cloud, or should you keep these on your hard drive and just keep the large edited jpeg on the cloud to save storage?

3) I complicate things by importing photos on the Canon Connect app when in hotel rooms, which saves a preview, is there a way that when I get home and download the original RAW is can see this and match?

4) In terms of workflow best practice, please let me know if this is sensible? Or suggest otherwise?

- Import contents of card (CR2 files) directly into LR (as this is the only app I can view CR2 files on)

- Go through the process of deleting the rubbish and selected the winners on there

- Then copy that subset of photos to my harddrive as CR2 files

Then edit on LR and convert to large jpegs, and delete the CR2s to save cloud space

Thoughts appreciated....?

From my perspective I look at the big picture "what can go wrong". Including the possibility that I lose all my files on any cloud service**.  I like to have at least two copies (more is better) in different places. For example, a cloud service and an external drive is good. Two cloud services + external drive or two external drives + cloud service would be better. My business would not survive losing my stuff, and I don't think I'm the only one.

I'd love to hear what is considered good practice by photographers (that isn't my line of work, so I don't have to deal with the huge volumes of data a photographer does).

** How could I lose all my files on a cloud service? Possibilities include * my human error * human error at the cloud service  * cloud service goes out of business * cloud service migrates to a new cloud and deletes all the old cloud files (Adobe have done this several times) * I get sick, fall behind on subscription, and by the time I'm well again, it's all gone * hacker deletes my cloud files * hacker steals my account and I can no longer get my stuff * I forget my password and ID and lose my records to find it again * cloud access needs system upgrades I can't afford * my country gets blocked from cloud access for political reasons * many more

Appart from political reasons which are improbable if you are located in a European country or in the USA, the most common reason for loosing your files in a cloud service is that the service gets shut down either voluntary or by other reasons. And not always you will have enough time to secure your data.

If you are located in a European country, it is also quite important (from a data protection point of view) to know where your data is hosted and if the US justice may have access to that data. The other way around is also theoretically a problem, but European data protection laws are more stringent.

I would never trust my data solely to a cloud service if that data is important. My pictures are very important.

Agreed - which is why I would upload to LR CC, and then copy to my harddrive, and then back up again to an external harddrive.

Just for complete clarity - please could someone confirm there is no catalog file on Lightroom CC (not classic)?

I'd like to throw one more thing into your mix: what about your backups? Especially for things that mainly live on the cloud. It may be that you have a curated library of SD cards in a safe place, and don't care about losing all your later edits, but I throw it out there anyway.

I certainly have not curated a library of SD cards in a safe place!!

Any advice on how to ensure complete backup would be really helpful...
