Question

How do I Segment the Lightroom Desktop view of All Photos?

Segmentation in the ’All Photos’ / Library view ofLightroom for iPad is very helpful. It allows me to quickly scroll back through recent days or weeks  of photos, looking for a specific photo or group of photos.

Adding Segmentation to the Desktop version of Lightroom would not only make the two apps more similar, it would add visual functionality. I could search, but when I can’t remember exactly what day it was (last Tuesday ?or was it last Wednesday?, or was it the week before?), I can easily scroll through to find it or them.

BTW—If this appear twice, it’s because when I selected ’Submit’ the first time, this field went blank, yet the ’Describe’ and ’Check’ fields were still filled.

Just can’t stop reiterating what a huge gap this is. I spent 3 weeks with just my iPhone in Europe using segmentation every single day. Now I’m home and looking forward to finishing off my photo editing using my MacBook and this missing feature grates on me tremendously.

    Hi @luxBorealis ,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback! You're right, Lightroom Desktop currently does not have a built-in segmentation feature for organizing photos by day, month, or year, similar to what's available in Lightroom for iPad.

However, there are some alternative sorting options that may help in the meantime. In the Grid view, you can sort your photos by:

    • Capture Date
    • Import Date
    • Modified Date
    • File Name
    • Star Rating

To access these, click the Sort option at the bottom of the Grid view toolbar and choose your preferred criteria. Sorting by Capture Date, for example, will group your photos chronologically, which may make it easier to scroll through and locate specific photos from a particular day or week.

We understand this isn't quite the same as the visual segmentation on iPad, and we appreciate you taking the time to suggest this improvement. To give your idea more visibility and allow other community members to vote on it, we're moving this post to the Feature Requests section. This helps our product team track and prioritize feature requests based on community interest.

We encourage you to keep an eye on it there, the more votes it gets, the more visibility it receives with the team!

One of the benefits of Lightroom for iPad is that I can segment the ’All Photos’/’Library’ view by day, month, year, hour, etc., allowing me to scroll through recent photos to find a group taken on a day when I’m not sure of the exact date. Did I shoot that last Tuesday? Last Wednesday? or was it the week before?

Segmentation cannot be done in Lightroom Desktop and I feel this would be a helpful feature. This would make the two versions of  the same app more similar, but more importantly, it would allow me to find photos faster without having to ’guess the date’ for the search function.
