How do I transfer my photos straight to a hard drive

Hi, I have read a few answers to this but it doesnt work.

I have nearly 2TB of photos on the cloud that I want to also put onto an external hard drive for double safe keeping. I only have 500gb on my imac so I need them to go straight to the external drive bypassing my mac.

What I've read says go to the CC desktop app and click on the three points to the right. I don't have these anywhere. Ive looked around a bit in other areas and can't find anything.

Can anyone help? I am running imac with ventura if that helpful.

Thanks.

Gen

1) Open Lightroom on the Desktop,  (ie NOT the CC Desktop App!)

2) Select the photos you want to download.

3) Click the [Share] icon-

4) Choose [Custom Settings]

5) Set the File type to [Oroginal + Settings]

6) Click [Export xxxx Photos]

7) Choose you local computer location for the download. (eg. a connected external drive.)

😎 Wait while they download. (Note: 'All' photos will take considerable time!)  May be better to do it one Album at a time in batches (at least as a trial).

There is a Downloader App available, but this is intended for situations where you might end or cease a subscription.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.3, Photoshop 27.5, ACR 18.3, Lightroom 9.3, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .

Thanks all. A combo of the above and me having a bit of a guess at things I got it done. Most effective was Rob's help. Thank you.

You can choose a Storage Location for Originals in Lightroom's Local Stoarge Preferences.

This however isn't a traditional back up as it just mirrors what is in your cloud storage. It's main use it that it gives you fast access to your photos of you are working through a lot of them, removing the time they take to load from the cloud.

If you want an independent back up then you would have to manually export from Lightroom or use the Lightroom Downloader Tool.
