Question

How to manage cloud storage

I use lightroom CC almost exclusivly. I edit a lot across devices, moving back and forth betweed a PC and ipad.  I have been uploading my images straight from the camera to the cloud, but I am running out of storage.  I think the best solution is to download the originals (RAW) and leave the smart previews in the cloud.  How do I do this? I want to still have originals ( just locally) and all of the edits and edit versions in the cloud. How do I do this?  Or do you have a better solution?

Hi @whittneys31968955, thank you for reaching out! I'll help you with this!

You're on the right track to keep the originals locally and sync the smart previews to the cloud to free up some cloud storage. Here is the guided workflow to achieve this:

1) You'll need to install Lightroom Classic on your system. You can do it via the Creative Cloud application.

2) In Classic, sign in with the same Adobe ID, go to Preferences > Lightroom Sync, and choose a local folder (e.g., on a local or external drive) as the storage location for originals. Click the Cloud icon on the top right, and Classic will start syncing with your cloud library. This will take some time.

3) If you've downloaded them onto your system locally, you'd need to copy them to a different location before deleting them from the cloud, as LrC would mirror whatever you do with the file on the cloud with the specified location on your system.

4) Since you've got your originals locally, you can now begin to free up some space from the cloud. Head over to https://adobe.ly/4nw2oNl, select the images currently stored as originals, and delete them from the cloud.

5) Now, you'd need to import the downloaded photos back into LrC. When you add an image to the collections in LrC and sync it, it automatically uploads Smart previews. With all your edits intact, your iPad and PC Lightroom CC apps will still see and edit those Smart Previews.

Hope this helps!
