How to save as PSD from Photoshop after round trip from Lightroom? + size question

I am editing an image in LR Cloud. I edit in Photoshop. Then press save. The image is now in LR and uploaded to cloud. First problem: it saved it as a TIFF. But where can I make a PSD the default? I can't see it in PS preferences.

The second problem is this - my original raw file is about 45 Mb. The TIFF is 650 Mb. I don't suppose the PSD will be much better. I have 1 Tb of data - but this is going to fill up pretty quickly with 650 Mb files. What do people do about this? I am thinking - maybe once I have made my edits I should just save it as a jpg. This means I won't be be to go back and adjust my edits - but maybe that is the only viable way. (I can't afford to pay Adobe for unlimited space).

 

Finally - I found this huge TIFF on my PC in: "C:\Users\ME\AppData\Local\Adobe\Lightroom CC\Data\b2ac514740d04bf482a520d9c942f75d\originals\2023\2023-09-02\_D801013-Edit.tif"

 

So it is flooding my hard disk as well! Is this permanent? I thought the whole idea was that only smart previews got saved locally?

You don't need to "dance"!  Accept TIFF as the Photoshop file of choice as it does 99% of everything that a PSD can do.

    So. To achieve what I want it seems to be a bit of a dance. I have to 'save as' the being edited file from Photoshop as a PSD. Then I export it with my edits merged in as a jpeg. Next I go back to LR. Here I have to delete the PSD which it has imported automatically. This doesn't actually delete it from my hard disk but it does stop it being synced to Adobe cloud and taking up 0.05% of my storage space. And, finally, I import the exported jpeg and group it in a stack with the original. 

    (I also synch the PSD folder with Google Drive as space is much cheaper there). This doesn't seem like a huge deal - I still have the PSD if I ever need to go back and adjust edits (which is rare) and the finished thing is conveniently in LR in the correct album. 

     

    Don't know if that helps anyone - or, if there is another way of achieving my objective which I haven't seen.
