How to unify workflow LR mobile and LRC over same files? Any experience and advices?

I need for some advice concerning a complex issue to solve between LRC and LR Mobile (android).

I’m a wedding photographer, and until now I’ve used 100% LRC for my work (desktop based). But in one week time I’m going for vacation, and since I will have some time there I though “hey - let’s make some wedding edits there” but… here are issues I’m facing, as the only mobile device I can take with me is a Samsung Galaxy Tab, which restricts me to LR mobile version (never used before). And what I need to achieve is a continuous workflow between LRC and LR mobile - so that all work I do in LR mobile is 100% unified and recognizable with LRC when I come back from vacation. Pls note - I’m using a 20GB cloud storage adobe plan (which is way too little for my work cloud based) plus I will probably be cut off the internet where I’m going. So I was hoping to find an offline version of work on LR mobile to work on RAW files. But when I started to analyze it, I faced the following issues.

  1. I’m using presets on LRC that include profiles applied from a non standard LUT cube files. I know that LR doesn’t accept cube files, and since I’ve found some workaround with creating a dng file imported to LR mobile - still it’s going to be a preset not recognised by LRC later on
  2. Lets assume I’m past the LUT issue, and I’ll have done the edits on Galaxy Tab. BUT - since it’s going to be thousands of images done there - how to move all workflow from LR mobile, to LRC in order to keep the ecosystem of LRC that is already being organised. How to make LRC import all the edits made offline in LR mobile, keeping all the presets, edit’s and foremost importing all RAW files, with edits made? Is it even possible?

Anyone faced such process? How to organize it well?

    It’s not clear to me how the raw files will get to LrM on the tablet. Are they images that already exist in your LrC catalog which you intend to sync to the cloud and thus to the tablet, or are they new images that you intend to import to the tablet while on vacation? That needs to be clarified in order to advise on a potential workflow.

    The “continuous workflow” between LrC and LrM is simple when using cloud syncing. Anything else is not going to be so easy.

    However, if you do intend to sync the images from LrC to the cloud, thus making them available to LrM on the tablet, you need to be aware that LrC only uploads Smart Previews of the raw files to the cloud. Smart Previews are smaller proxy files, maximum 2560 pixels on the long edge. Whilst suitable for light editing (and applying presets), they may not be good enough for more detailed work requiring a true 1:1 view. The good news is that they do not count against your 20GB cloud space, so there would be no restriction on the number of files that you sync to the cloud. Any edits you make in LrM would sync back to the cloud and thus back to LrC (provided you keep the LrC catalog sync-enabled).

      Actually I was thinking of uploading the files directly into the tablet to be used in LrM - so that I can work on full RAW files for best results.

       

      Regarding the info about smart previews being uploaded - It’s good to know, as you mentioned well it will not be enough for a detailed work that I intend to do :(  Btw. If theese do not count for 20GB cloud storage limit - what does then?

       

      I was also thinking, to upload all the files into LrC catalogue, apply base preset, and make final edits after cloud syncing in LrM - BUT I see LrM doesn’t recognize the LUT file applied, which was introduced manually to LrC :( So that solution is also not good :(  Even if I applied preset with standard LUTs, and synced to LrM I’ve encountered an issue, that LrM will not edit these files, if the internet connection is absent :( (which will probably happen a lot - ex. in the plane) :(

      Importing the files directly into LrM would mean keeping syncing paused as the amount of space taken up by the “thousands of images” that you are talking about would likely exceed the 20GB cloud storage allowance (and would you have enough space on the tablet to accommodate all the images?). Even if you can fit them all onto the tablet, you’d then have the challenge of getting them off the tablet with the edits, then have the further challenge of pairing the edits with the original images in your LrC catalog. It all might be doable, but it won’t be easy.

       

      TBH, the smart preview route is by far the easiest method, and it would be easy to deal with the offline use (by storing all the smart previews on the tablet). You could try it first, just add a few images to a new collection in LrC, then sync that collection. After the SPs are uploaded to the cloud, they’ll then be available in LrM on the tablet and you could see whether they’re good enough for your editing.
