Question

I am planning to purchase a 13 inch iPad Air to run Lightroom (and other apps) Am unsure what size memory to purchase. Any advice would be welcome.

eg would 256GB be more useful than 128GB (not prepared to buy more than 256GB)? If connected to the Cloud or an external drive would 128GB be enough for initial processing?

Just some anecdotal background. I have an iPhone with 128GB storage and an iPad with 256GB, and of course I use Lightroom on both. I don’t really worry about the 256GB iPad, it still has lots of free space. But I am often having to delete data on the 128GB iPhone because it gets too close to being full. This is due to factors other than just Lightroom, so this can be affected by other apps you use, if they might also need to cache or store data locally as well as what else you choose to store on it. But at least in my opinion, 256GB works much better. I don’t anticipate needing 512GB.

For initial Lightroom processing, the amount can be affected by how many images you import at once, how many megapixels they are, and how you set up Lightroom. For example, if you only import a few images at a time, and they’re below (for example only) 24 megapixels, and you set Lightroom to the lower-resolution options under Image Quality, it’s more likely that 128GB might be OK. But if you often import a large number of high-megapixel images, and you’ve set Lightroom to prefer editing full-resolution originals, then it will naturally need to keep more higher-resolution copies on the device and that would need more space on the iPad to cache the local copies of those images.

Hi Anshul - many thanks for a rapid and very helpful reply. I will read the link, but my gut feeling was that more memory is usually best for smooth working and provides some future proofing as camera and LR requirements generally increase over time

You’re very welcome, @RogerAH! And I completely understand your thinking about future-proofing.

As Lightroom continues to evolve and introduce more advanced features, its hardware requirements may increase over time, so having additional headroom is definitely worth considering.

One thing worth mentioning is that RAM and storage capacity are different. On the iPad Air, RAM is generally fixed for a given model, regardless of whether you choose 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or higher storage capacity. Higher storage capacities don’t automatically mean more RAM, although certain iPad Pro configurations have historically offered additional RAM.

There’s also an interesting difference in storage performance across some configurations. Recent benchmark results suggest that the newer 13” M4 iPad Air may offer noticeably faster storage at higher capacities. In particular, the 512GB configuration delivers approximately 2× faster sequential read speeds and over 3× faster write speeds than the 128GB and 256GB configurations. This aligns with the benefits of using multiple NAND flash chips, which can work in parallel. If your workflow involves large RAW files, frequent imports, or lots of local storage activity, faster storage may be helpful. Keep in mind, though, that these results come from a limited number of benchmark samples, and the difference won’t necessarily translate into twice the Lightroom performance.

For that reason, my personal recommendation would actually be the 512GB configuration, particularly if you’re planning to keep the iPad for several years.

I know you mentioned that 256GB was your maximum budget, so I completely understand if 512GB isn’t an option. I just wanted to highlight this raw benchmark difference before you make your purchase.

    Hi @RogerAH,

Thanks for reaching out! Happy to help you choose the right iPad Air configuration.

Both the 128GB and 256GB models should work well with Lightroom. The 13-inch iPad Air (M2, 2024) has 8GB RAM, while the newer M4 (2026) model has 12GB RAM. Both exceed Lightroom’s recommended 4GB RAM.

You can review the official system requirements here: https://adobe.ly/47Nd4Bm

My recommendation would depend on your workflow:

    • 128GB: Should be sufficient for casual editing, smaller batches of RAW files, and occasional photo editing.

    • 256GB: A better choice if you regularly work with large batches, high-resolution RAW files, or need to keep photos available offline.

Since your Photography plan includes 20GB of cloud storage, I’d lean toward 256GB if your budget allows, as Lightroom also uses local storage for originals, previews, and caching. An external drive can help with storage, but it doesn’t eliminate Lightroom’s need for local working space.

If you’re primarily doing occasional edits, however, 128GB should serve you well.

Hope this helps you make your decision!
