I take 2000 RAW files at football matches and process them in LR, the process is unacceptbly slow. Why?

I take about 2000 RAW files at football matches and when I process them in Lightroom offline.  It can take five or six hours.  This is unacceptable. What is going wrong?  What can be done to remedy this?
