I want to go to an iPad workflow instead of laptop for travel - one issue found!

Hi Guys,

I've got a new iPad Pro and am wanting to use it for travel instead of using my Macbook Pro.

I can get photos from my camera onto my iPad no issue, I think imported them into lightroom and I can edit as I see fit.

The issue I found was if I copy an entire card over and into Lightroom it'll try and sync them all and they aren't all worth syncing.

I then decided to disable sync before I imported, then I went through all the photos, deleting the ones i didn't want and had what I thought was a good workflow.

Unfortunately, when I enable sync again it sync's the total number of images originally imported - so it sync's the deleted ones too.

Is there a setting somewhere that i'm missing that stops if from syncing deleted photos to the cloud?

This could be very costly and time consuming when travelling and is not the desired outcome.

If there is a way to stop this can someone let me know how to do it, if not, are there any other iPad users out there that can offer up an alternative workflow?

Using Files on the ipad to browse the images first and put them in a 'picks' folder and only importing that doesn't work as the way the ipad previews and moves files between folders is terrible.

Here are the steps to follow:

1. Turn off sync

2. Import images

3. Cull images

4. Open deleted images folder and make sure they are purged

5. enable sync

One of the features of Lr is to keep deleted images for you for sixty days. In yiour case, you did not purge the deleted images before you re-enabled the sync.

In the same boat. I would like to save the photos to an external drive and edit them from there. Upon returning home I would then import only the ones I wanted into Lightroom on my Mac. Often when I travel I have little to no internet access and when I do it is so slow that it is virtually worthless for sync purposes. Having access to local storage similar to the recent Lightroom desktop version on the mobile version would be great.

The reason for the upload of deleted images is because the "trash can" is stored in the cloud, thus giving access to it for restore purposes from any of your other clients apps.

So, if you follow the process outlined by Tim, be aware that those images that you delete locally are gone forever without that 60-day "change of mind" period that the "trash can" allows. I assume you'll be taking backups when you travel, even if that's only keeping the camera memory cards.

My plan is ingest to ipad, copy to external SSD, then import to lightroom from ipad, cull in lightroom, then edit in lightroom and sync the good ones.

The cull in lightroom after import appears completely detatched from the files on the ipad so i'll still have two copies (and orignals on camera card)  by the looks of it which is a bonus
