Is there a way to import photos directly from a D780 to Lightroom in an iPad?

With the camera cable and a lightning adapter then you should be able to, without removing the card from the camera. Or failing that, a SD Card reader if you don't mind taking it out.

Although, as Jim says if it's tethered, then this isn't yet possible.
