Importing With Keywords Problem

When I import photos with multiple keywords already applied, Lightroom combines them into 1 single keyword, instead of individual keywords.  Is there any way to either prevent this from happening during the import process or separate the one keyword that was created into individual keywords after the import?  Thanks!
