Inconsistent RAW import to iPad with Lightroom 6.4

I have a current generation iPad Pro and the most recent update to Lightroom (6.4) on it. When I go to import .cr3 RAW files with a Thundebolt 3 reader and cable, I get inconsistent results. Sometimes it will import all 2,000 of them no problem. Other times, it will only see varying numbers of them as I disconnect and reconnect the reader. Sometimes restarting my iPad helps, other times, no. Today, I was trying to import 290 files, and I got listings ranging from 45 files to 169 files, but in no case would it display all of the images for import. (Note: I have plenty of room on my iPad for the files.) Since I was home, I just imported them to Lightroom Classic on my MBP and waited for the Smart Previews to upload to the cloud. However, I travel and frequently don't take my laptop. I want to import my files to Lightroom on my iPad, make my selections while they are uploading, and do my final edits on my MBP when I'm back in my office. I know that sends a ton of files to the cloud, but I generally have pretty speedy internet. Mostly, I do this to have an offsite backup until I can get home and do my usual backup routine. My reason for this workflow are two-fold. First, I don't delete any photos until I've completed a job, and then I keep only the selects and the edits. Second, I prefer culling photos on the iPad, as it goes much quicker, and I can start doing it immediately after importing the files. Is this problem of not displaying all the files for import a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Ok, thank you for all the details.  I will pass the info to the LR app developers to investigate.

[Edit] For now, my suggestion would be to import the images to your camera roll first, and then import to Lightroom from there.  I know this two step process and the subsequent camera roll housekeeping you would probably do is not desirable, but it's the one way you can be sure Lightroom is able to import all your images.

The Photos app worked just like it was supposed to, importing all the files in less than a minute.

Thanks for the notes.

And how well does Apple's Photo app do at reading images that Lightroom cannot see?  Does the Photos app do better?

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the reply. I have let Lightroom run for a few minutes to see if it finds any more images, and the light on my card reader continues to flash. When everything works correctly, the files are all listed in less than a minute, and when importing them via Thunderbolt 3, many gigs of photos take just seconds.

I have the current generation 11-inch M1 iPad (Model number MHQU3LL/A) with 256GB storage. I'm running iPadOS 14.7.1 and Lightroom 6.4.0.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Hello @Evansb2

Thanks for contacting us about this issue.  Let me ask a couple questions that the LR engineering team would likely want to know to investigate this further.

When Lightroom's importer screen has trouble seeing all images as expected, does waiting a little longer help (to allow sufficient read time)?

When Lightroom has trouble seeing all images, is the native iOS Photos.app more successful and able to see all images?  The reason I ask is that I hear LR simply leverages platform APIs, and whatever works in Apple's Photos app should also work in Lightroom.  And any mismatch you see would indeed point to an issue Lightroom should investigate.

Just to confirm, what is your exact iPad Pro model (and screensize), and iPad OS version you're running?  If not the latest iOS, does updating help?
